Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Information Security Manager
Document your cybersecurity credentials before applying
Assemble certifications like CISSP, CISM, or CISA alongside transcripts and employment records before approaching host employers. Designated sponsors evaluate your professional background when deciding whether to issue a DS-2019, so gaps slow the process considerably.
Target host employers with active security compliance needs
Financial institutions, defense contractors, and healthcare networks routinely host J-1 exchange visitors because their regulatory obligations in frameworks like NIST or HIPAA create ongoing demand for experienced security professionals that internal teams can't always fill.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter Information Security Manager positions at U.S. employers that have hosted exchange visitors or sponsored work visas before. Targeting those employers significantly shortens the time from offer to DS-2019 issuance.
Understand which J-1 category your background qualifies for
Recent graduates entering a structured security rotation typically qualify under the Trainee category. Experienced professionals brought in for a specialized project or knowledge exchange generally fall under Specialist. Confirm which category your designated sponsor will use before your host employer commits.
Negotiate your training plan before signing the offer
The J-1 Trainee and Specialist categories both require a formal Training Plan (Form DS-7002). Your host employer completes it, but your designated sponsor must approve it, so misaligned job duties and stated objectives cause delays after the offer stage.
Check whether your role triggers the home residency requirement
Certain J-1 participants must return to their home country for two years before changing to an H-1B or green card. USCIS determines applicability based on funding source and skills list. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting a host employer offer.

Find Information Security Manager JobsInformation Security Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Information Security Manager role?
It depends on your career stage. If you're a recent graduate entering a structured rotation, the Trainee category applies. If you're an established security professional invited for a defined exchange of expertise, the Specialist category is the better fit. Your designated sponsor, not your host employer, makes the final determination based on your background and the proposed program objectives.
Who actually sponsors a J-1 visa for this role, the employer or someone else?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not your host employer. The employer hosts you and defines the work, but the designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors your program compliance, and serves as your primary contact with the State Department throughout your exchange.
How do I find Information Security Manager host employers open to J-1 exchange visitors?
Search Migrate Mate for Information Security Manager roles at U.S. employers with a demonstrated history of hosting exchange visitors or sponsoring work visas. Employers in regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and defense are especially common host organizations because their compliance obligations create sustained demand for security expertise.
Does a J-1 Information Security Manager role require a formal training plan?
Yes. Both the Trainee and Specialist categories require a completed Form DS-7002, which maps your day-to-day responsibilities to specific learning objectives. Your host employer writes it, but your designated sponsor must approve it before issuing the DS-2019. Vague or misaligned plans are a common reason for delays, so align the document closely with the actual security management work you'll perform.
Can a J-1 Information Security Manager transition to an H-1B after the program ends?
Potentially, but the two-year home residency requirement may apply. USCIS assesses whether your J-1 funding came from your home government or a U.S. government program, and whether your specialty appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. If the requirement applies, you must return home for two years before an H-1B or immigrant visa is available, unless a waiver is granted.
