JOB SUMMARY
Lab Overview
The Prison Education Action Research Lab (PEARL) at the University of Utah advances educational justice for people and communities impacted by incarceration. Funded by an award from Ascendium Education Group, PEARL leverages evidence-based research to change systems and reduce barriers to postsecondary education for people directly impacted by the criminal legal system. PEARL’s anchor project, the Prison Education Research Initiative (PERI), is a first-of-its-kind multi-institutional longitudinal study spanning 21+ partner colleges and universities nationwide.
Position Summary
PEARL is seeking a Senior Research Associate (SRA) with deep expertise in and professional experience with multi-site, multi-methods qualitative research. The SRA will lead data integration, synthesizing qualitative findings with quantitative data in collaboration with the broader research team across PEARL’s research portfolio. This position will work in close partnership with PEARL’s Senior Quantitative Research Associate to design and produce research that is both interpretively rich and analytically robust. Alongside Center leadership, the SRA will mentor emerging researchers and help the Lab translate findings into scholarship, research briefs, technical reports, and presentations. The SRA will work under the supervision of the Lab Director.
We strongly encourage applications from individuals directly impacted by incarceration and punishment systems.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Senior Mobile Developer
Align your portfolio to U.S. standards
Host employers evaluate mobile developers on published apps, GitHub repositories, and platform-specific certifications for iOS or Android. Document measurable outcomes in each project before applying, since vague portfolios stall J-1 visa training plan approvals.
Confirm your program category before applying
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, you qualify under the Intern category. If you graduated within the past year and have relevant work experience, the Trainee category applies. Applying under the wrong category forces a restart with a different designated sponsor.
Search for J-1-compatible roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by Senior Mobile Developer positions on Migrate Mate to surface host employers already familiar with exchange visitor requirements. Targeting companies with J-1 hosting history shortens negotiation time and reduces the risk of a host withdrawing after the DS-2019 process begins.
Get your training plan approved before accepting offers
Designated sponsors like CIEE or Cultural Vistas require a completed Training or Internship Placement Plan before issuing your DS-2019. Confirm your prospective host employer will complete this document, since many tech companies are unfamiliar with the obligation and delay the process.
Check whether the 2-year home residency requirement applies
If your training is funded by your home government or you're a national of a country the U.S. Department of State has designated as having a critical skills shortage, you may face a two-year home residency requirement before changing to certain other visa categories.
Verify your host employer's legal work authorization setup
Host employers must complete Form I-9 for J-1 exchange visitors and may be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask your prospective host whether their HR team has processed J-1 hires before, since first-time hosts often underestimate I-9 documentation requirements for exchange visitor status.
Senior Mobile Developer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Senior Mobile Developer role?
Most Senior Mobile Developer candidates qualify under the Trainee category, which is designed for professionals who have a degree and at least one year of relevant work experience, or five years of experience without a degree. Current students or recent graduates within 12 months of completing a degree may qualify under the Intern category instead. The designated sponsor determines which category applies based on your specific background.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a mobile developer position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or IIE, not your host employer. That designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, monitors your training plan compliance, and serves as the official sponsor of record. Your host employer provides the technical role and work environment but does not hold sponsor status under the J-1 program.
How do I find host employers open to J-1 mobile developers?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Senior Mobile Developer roles at companies already familiar with J-1 exchange visitor requirements. Targeting employers with prior J-1 hosting experience is practical because they understand the Training or Internship Placement Plan paperwork and the designated sponsor's monitoring obligations, which significantly reduces delays between offer acceptance and DS-2019 issuance.
What documents do I need before a host employer can file the J-1 training plan?
You'll need a detailed description of your mobile development background, including platform specializations such as Swift, Kotlin, or React Native, degree certificates or transcripts, and a letter from your home institution or employer if applicable. The host employer completes the Training or Internship Placement Plan alongside the designated sponsor, so having your credentials organized in English accelerates that process considerably.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement affect Senior Mobile Developers?
It can, depending on your nationality and funding source. If your home country's government funded your training, or if your country appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, you may be required to return home for two years before you're eligible for certain other U.S. visa categories, including H-1B visa or a green card. Confirm your country's status with your designated sponsor before accepting a training position.
