JOB SUMMARY
Lab Overview
The Prison Education Action Research Lab (PEARL) at the University of Utah advances educational justice for people and communities impacted by incarceration. Funded by an award from Ascendium Education Group, PEARL leverages evidence-based research to change systems and reduce barriers to postsecondary education for people directly impacted by the criminal legal system. PEARL’s anchor project, the Prison Education Research Initiative (PERI), is a first-of-its-kind multi-institutional longitudinal study spanning 21+ partner colleges and universities nationwide.
Position Summary
PEARL is seeking a Senior Research Associate (SRA) with deep expertise in and professional experience with multi-site, multi-methods qualitative research. The SRA will lead data integration, synthesizing qualitative findings with quantitative data in collaboration with the broader research team across PEARL’s research portfolio. This position will work in close partnership with PEARL’s Senior Quantitative Research Associate to design and produce research that is both interpretively rich and analytically robust. Alongside Center leadership, the SRA will mentor emerging researchers and help the Lab translate findings into scholarship, research briefs, technical reports, and presentations. The SRA will work under the supervision of the Lab Director.
We strongly encourage applications from individuals directly impacted by incarceration and punishment systems.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Senior Researcher
Align your CV to U.S. research standards
U.S. host institutions reviewing Research Scholar candidates expect a publication list formatted for American academic conventions, including journal impact factors and grant histories. Reformat before applying so reviewers don't have to translate your credentials.
Confirm your program category before applying
Research Scholar requires a degree and prior independent research experience, while Short-Term Scholar suits visits under six months. Misidentifying your category delays DS-2019 issuance and can force a restart with a different designated sponsor organization.
Target host institutions with active designated sponsors
Not every research employer can host a J-1 visa exchange visitor. Universities and federal labs affiliated with sponsors like IIE or CIEE already have the infrastructure to issue DS-2019 forms. Search Migrate Mate to find Senior Researcher openings at employers with confirmed J-1 visa hosting capability.
Negotiate your training plan before signing
Your designated sponsor requires a signed training plan detailing research objectives, supervision structure, and milestones before issuing the DS-2019. Clarify these terms with your host institution during the offer stage, not after, to avoid delays at the sponsorship organization.
Check whether your field triggers the home residency requirement
Research Scholars funded by their home government or working in fields on the Exchange Visitor Skills List face a two-year home residency requirement after the program ends. Verify your field's classification with your designated sponsor before accepting the role if you plan to stay in the U.S.
Request a 30-day grace period exit plan from your sponsor
J-1 Research Scholars receive a 30-day grace period after the program end date for departure preparation, not continued research. Coordinate your final deliverables and any institutional access needs with your host before that clock starts.
Senior Researcher J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Senior Researcher role?
Most Senior Researcher positions fall under the Research Scholar category, which is designed for experienced professionals conducting research at a U.S. host institution. If the engagement is shorter than six months and more observational than hands-on, Short-Term Scholar may apply instead. Your designated sponsor organization, not your host employer, makes the final category determination and issues your DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a research position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as IIE, CIEE, or Cultural Vistas. These organizations issue the DS-2019 form, monitor your program compliance, and serve as your legal sponsor throughout the exchange. Your host institution where you conduct research is the employer but not the designated visa sponsor. The two roles are separate.
How do I find Senior Researcher roles where J-1 hosting is already in place?
Search Migrate Mate to identify Senior Researcher openings at U.S. employers and research institutions that already work within J-1 hosting frameworks. Many universities and federal labs have established relationships with designated sponsors, which accelerates DS-2019 issuance once you receive an offer. Targeting these hosts avoids the delay of an employer setting up sponsorship infrastructure from scratch.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Senior Researcher positions?
It depends on two factors: whether your research field appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List published by the State Department, and whether your exchange was financed by your home government or a U.S. government agency. Research Scholars in fields on that list, or those receiving government funding, are typically subject to the requirement. Your designated sponsor can confirm applicability for your specific situation before you accept the position.
Can a J-1 Research Scholar extend beyond the initial program end date?
Yes. Research Scholar programs can be extended up to a maximum of five years, provided your host institution requests the extension through your designated sponsor before the current DS-2019 expires. Extensions require a program update and sponsor approval. You cannot extend on your own. Plan the request at least 30 days before your end date to avoid any gap in authorized status.
