Document your construction supervision credentials precisely
Gather transcripts, professional licenses, and employer letters that directly tie your education or prior site experience to the scope of U.S. supervisory roles. Vague credentials slow the DS-2019 issuance process significantly.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility before applying
The J-1 Intern category requires current enrollment or graduation within the past 12 months. If you graduated more than a year ago, target the Trainee category, which covers post-degree professionals building on field experience.
Search for host employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. employers actively hiring Site Supervisors in J-1-compatible arrangements. Targeting hosts with prior exchange visitor experience shortens the coordination timeline with a designated sponsor organization.
Confirm the host employer will sign a Training Plan
Before accepting an offer, verify that the employer agrees to complete and sign the Training Plan (Form DS-7002). Many construction and project management firms are unfamiliar with this requirement and may withdraw when they learn of it.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year home residency requirement
Site Supervisor positions funded by your home government or tied to skills listed on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may carry the J-1 two-year home residency requirement. Confirm your status with the designated sponsor before accepting the host offer.
Align your Training Plan activities with OFLC Wage Search benchmarks
Designated sponsors and USCIS both scrutinize whether your training activities match legitimate supervisory duties. Cross-reference the planned tasks against the O*NET occupation profile for Construction Supervisors to flag any mismatches early.
Site Supervisor J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Site Supervisor role?
Most Site Supervisor candidates qualify under the J-1 Trainee category, which is designed for professionals with a degree or post-secondary certificate and at least one year of relevant work experience outside the United States. Current students or recent graduates within 12 months of completing a construction management or related degree may qualify under the Intern category instead. The designated sponsor organization confirms which category applies based on your documents.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Site Supervisor position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the construction or project management firm that hires you. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT administer the program, issue the DS-2019 form, and monitor compliance. The hiring employer is the host organization. Both parties must agree to participate, and the host must sign a Training Plan outlining your supervisory activities.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Site Supervisor?
Many employers in construction, infrastructure, and project management are unfamiliar with the J-1 Trainee program and may not list it on job postings. Migrate Mate lets you search for Site Supervisor roles with employers that have structured exchange visitor arrangements, so you can focus outreach on hosts who already understand the program requirements rather than starting from scratch with every application.
Can a Site Supervisor on J-1 status bring a spouse or dependents to the United States?
Yes. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can accompany you on J-2 dependent status. J-2 holders are eligible to apply for an Employment Authorization Document from USCIS, which would allow them to work in the United States independently of your J-1 program. Their status is tied to yours, so if your program ends or is terminated early, their J-2 status ends as well.
What happens if my Site Supervisor training program ends before I complete it?
Your designated sponsor must report any early termination to the State Department through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). You typically have a 30-day grace period after program completion or termination to depart the United States or take steps to change status. Early termination can affect future visa applications, so resolve any issues directly with the designated sponsor before the end date rather than simply leaving the host site.
