Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Travel Consultant
Document your hospitality credentials before applying
Gather transcripts, employer letters, and certifications that confirm your background in tourism, travel planning, or hospitality management. Designated sponsors require evidence that your training objective aligns with your prior education or professional experience.
Target host employers with international client portfolios
Travel agencies and corporate travel management firms that serve international travelers are more familiar with exchange visitor documentation requirements. Search for open roles on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers receptive to J-1 exchange visitors.
Distinguish the Intern and Trainee categories before accepting an offer
The Intern category applies if you're currently enrolled in a degree program or graduated within the past 12 months. Trainee status fits early-career professionals with at least one year of relevant work experience outside the United States.
Confirm your host employer will sign a formal training plan
Designated sponsors require a completed DS-7002 training plan that maps your daily tasks to specific learning objectives. Ask hiring managers directly whether their HR or legal team has executed this document for J-1 exchange visitors before.
Check whether the 2-year home residency requirement applies to you
The J-1 two-year home country physical presence requirement can affect your ability to switch to an H-1B or other work visa afterward. Your eligibility depends on your country of nationality, your funding source, and your specific exchange program category.
Verify prevailing wage compliance before your program begins
Your compensation must meet the wage level for your occupation and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the applicable rate for Travel Consultant roles in your city, and confirm your offer letter reflects that threshold.

Find Travel Consultant JobsTravel Consultant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Travel Consultant role?
Most Travel Consultant placements fall under either the Intern or Trainee category. Intern applies if you're currently enrolled in a post-secondary program or graduated within the past 12 months. Trainee is the correct category if you completed your degree more than 12 months ago and have at least one year of professional experience in travel, tourism, or hospitality outside the United States.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Travel Consultant position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT, not the travel agency or corporate employer where you work. The employer is your host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, approves your training plan, and monitors your compliance throughout the exchange program period.
How do I find U.S. employers that are willing to host J-1 Travel Consultants?
The clearest signal is whether a travel agency or corporate travel management firm has hosted J-1 exchange visitors before. Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. roles and employers that align with J-1 exchange visitor placements, so you can focus your applications on organizations already familiar with the DS-7002 training plan process.
Can I transition from a J-1 Travel Consultant placement to an H-1B afterward?
Possibly, but the two-year home country physical presence requirement may block the transition. If your J-1 is funded by a government agency or your home country's government, or if your country is listed on the State Department's skills list, you must return home for two years before applying for an H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visa. Review your DS-2019 and consult a designated sponsor compliance officer before assuming the path is clear.
What documentation does a Travel Consultant need before a designated sponsor will issue a DS-2019?
Sponsors typically require proof of your current enrollment or recent graduation, a degree or transcript confirming a relevant field of study, a signed training plan from the host employer using the DS-7002 form, evidence of financial support for your stay, and health insurance that meets the State Department's minimum coverage standards. Missing any one of these delays the DS-2019 issuance and pushes back your program start date.
