Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Growth
Match your credentials to the right J-1 category
Current students pursuing growth, marketing, or business development internships qualify under the Intern category. If you've graduated within the past 12 months, the Trainee category applies instead. Confusing the two at the DS-2019 stage delays or voids your placement.
Build a training plan before you approach employers
Designated sponsors require a structured Training or Internship Placement Plan before issuing your DS-2019. Draft specific learning objectives tied to growth functions like conversion optimization, funnel analysis, or paid acquisition so host employers can sign off quickly.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-receptive employers
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies that have hosted international exchange visitors in growth and marketing roles. Filtering by exchange-visitor history saves you from pitching employers who've never navigated the host-company process.
Verify your host employer's eligibility before accepting
Your host employer must demonstrate it can provide structured, supervised training in a lawful U.S. business. Ask the employer to confirm it will sign the training plan and cooperate with your designated sponsor's compliance visits before you finalize the offer.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year home residency requirement
Growth roles funded by a government or international organization, or filled by nationals from certain countries, can carry the two-year home-country residence requirement under INA Section 212(e). Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Time your DS-2019 request around program start dates
Designated sponsors typically need two to four weeks to issue a DS-2019 after receiving a completed training plan. Submit your host employer's signed documents at least six weeks before your intended U.S. start date to avoid consular appointment delays.
Growth J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers growth roles?
Growth positions typically fall under the Intern category if you're currently enrolled in a degree program, or the Trainee category if you've graduated within the past 12 months and have relevant work experience. Both categories require a structured training plan signed by your host employer and issued by a State Department-designated sponsor such as CIEE or Cultural Vistas.
Who is the actual J-1 visa sponsor for a growth position?
The sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your hiring employer. Organizations like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, and AIPT issue the DS-2019 form that authorizes your exchange visitor status. Your host employer, the company where you'll do growth work, signs the training plan and serves as the program host but does not hold sponsorship authority.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 growth interns or trainees?
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies that align with J-1 visa exchange visitor programs in growth and marketing functions. Many startups and mid-size companies are open to hosting but aren't actively advertising it. Approaching them with a completed draft training plan demonstrating your growth skill set and learning objectives substantially improves your chances of a positive response.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to growth roles?
It depends on your specific circumstances. The two-year home-country physical presence requirement under INA Section 212(e) applies if your program is government-funded, if your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if you're a foreign medical graduate. Growth roles in private-sector companies are less commonly subject to this requirement, but you must confirm with your designated sponsor before your program begins.
Can I extend my J-1 program if the growth role continues beyond the initial period?
Extensions are possible but must be approved by your designated sponsor, not your host employer. Intern programs are capped at 12 months total, while Trainee programs allow up to 18 months. Your host employer must submit a revised training plan to the sponsor demonstrating that the extended period covers distinct learning objectives beyond those already completed.
