Build a DS-2019-ready training plan document
Designated sponsors require a detailed Training Plan (Form DS-7002) before issuing your DS-2019. Draft it before applying, mapping your Commercial Account Executive duties to specific sales competencies, tools, and learning milestones across each program phase.
Confirm the host employer qualifies under J-1 rules
Your host company must have a genuine training capacity, not just a job opening. Verify they can assign a supervisor, support structured learning, and sign off on your DS-7002 before you accept an offer.
Target industries with established J-1 Trainee pipelines
Technology sales, SaaS, and B2B services companies have the highest concentration of host employers accustomed to the J-1 visa Trainee category. Focusing your search on these sectors cuts down on employer education and speeds up offer-to-DS-2019 timelines.
Search for J-1-aligned roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Commercial Account Executive openings by employers familiar with J-1 hosting requirements. Targeting companies with prior exchange visitor experience significantly reduces the friction of converting an offer into a valid DS-2019 placement.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
Some Commercial Account Executive trainees are subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement based on government funding or skills-list status. Check your eligibility with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer, since this affects future H-1B visa or green card pathways.
Request the DS-2019 before your program start date
USCIS and your designated sponsor both require the DS-2019 to be issued before your J-1 status can begin. Coordinate timelines with your host employer so the sponsor receives complete documentation at least three to four weeks before your planned start.
Commercial Account Executive J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Commercial Account Executive roles?
Most Commercial Account Executives pursue J-1 sponsorship under the Trainee category, which covers post-degree professionals with at least one year of relevant work experience outside the United States. Current students or recent graduates with less than one year of experience may qualify under the Intern category instead. Your eligibility depends on your career stage and the structured training the host employer can demonstrate.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if the employer is just the host?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or CIEE, not your employer. The designated sponsor reviews your Training Plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your program compliance. The hiring company is the host organization, responsible for providing the actual training environment and supervising your work.
How do I find Commercial Account Executive employers who are familiar with J-1 hosting?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Commercial Account Executive roles at companies that have prior experience working with J-1 exchange visitors. Targeting employers who already understand DS-7002 requirements and have an established relationship with a designated sponsor shortens the time between offer and DS-2019 issuance considerably.
Can a Commercial Account Executive on J-1 work on commission-based compensation structures?
Commission-based pay is permissible under the J-1 Trainee category, but your total compensation must meet the prevailing wage standard for the role and location. Your designated sponsor will review the compensation structure as part of program approval. Pure commission arrangements with no base salary can raise questions during DS-7002 review, so a base-plus-commission structure is the safer setup.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Commercial Account Executive trainees?
It can. The two-year home-country physical presence requirement applies if your J-1 program is funded by your home government, if you came from a country on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if your program falls under a government-sponsored category. Check your DS-2019 to see whether this requirement is annotated, because it directly affects future eligibility for H-1B status or adjustment of status to permanent residence.
