Align your portfolio to specialty occupation standards
DS-2019 training plans for Trainee or Specialist categories require documented evidence that your marketing expertise is field-specific. Compile campaign performance data, channel ownership records, and budget authority examples before approaching any host employer.
Distinguish Trainee from Specialist eligibility early
The Trainee category suits professionals with a degree plus one year of experience or five years of work experience. The Specialist category requires substantial expertise in a specialized field. Misidentifying your category delays DS-2019 issuance by weeks.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-compatible marketing leadership roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter for Digital Marketing Director positions at U.S. employers with demonstrated exchange visitor hosting history, saving time you'd otherwise spend vetting companies manually through disclosure databases.
Target host employers with established J-1 hosting history
Companies that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before already have HR processes for signing training plans and coordinating with designated sponsors. Prioritize those organizations to reduce back-and-forth delays during the offer stage.
Confirm the 2-year home residency requirement applies to you
Certain J-1 participants are subject to a two-year foreign residency requirement after their program ends, which affects future H-1B or green card eligibility. Check your DS-2019 and country of nationality against State Department guidance before accepting any offer.
Request the training plan before signing any offer letter
The DS-2019 training plan must specify measurable learning objectives for your Digital Marketing Director role. Review it for accuracy against your actual duties before your designated sponsor submits it, because corrections after submission extend your start date.

Find Digital Marketing Director JobsDigital Marketing Director J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Digital Marketing Director role?
Most Digital Marketing Directors qualify under the Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you hold a relevant degree plus at least one year of professional experience, or five or more years of field experience without a degree. Specialist applies when your expertise is narrowly defined and recognized within the digital marketing field. Research Scholar applies only if the role is housed within an academic or research institution and involves formal scholarly exchange.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Digital Marketing Director?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your hiring employer. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form and monitor program compliance. The company where you work is the host employer. It signs the training plan and sets your compensation, but it does not hold sponsorship authority under State Department rules.
How can I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 Digital Marketing Directors?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Digital Marketing Director roles at companies with J-1 hosting compatibility. Host employers typically have prior experience coordinating with designated sponsor organizations and HR teams familiar with training plan requirements. Targeting those companies shortens the time between an offer and your DS-2019 issuance significantly.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Digital Marketing Directors on J-1?
It can. The two-year foreign residency requirement under INA Section 212(e) applies to J-1 participants whose program is funded by a U.S. or home-country government, whose home country's skills list includes digital marketing, or who are in certain exchange categories. If it applies, you cannot change to H-1B or permanent resident status in the U.S. until you fulfill or obtain a waiver of that requirement. Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
What does the DS-2019 training plan need to include for a Digital Marketing director position?
The training plan must outline specific, measurable learning objectives tied to your digital marketing duties, a week-by-week or phase-based schedule of activities, supervision details, and evaluation criteria. Generic plans that simply list job duties get rejected by designated sponsors. Work with your host employer's HR team to document how the role advances your professional development beyond what your current experience already covers, which is the core legal requirement for the Trainee and Specialist categories.
