Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Underwriting Assistant
Align your training plan with underwriting tasks
Your DS-2019 requires a detailed Training or Internship Placement Plan (T/IPP) outlining specific underwriting tasks you'll perform. Map your plan to risk evaluation, policy documentation, and exposure analysis so your designated sponsor can certify the training objectives.
Verify host employers carry E&O coverage
J-1 Trainee regulations require host organizations to carry adequate insurance. Insurance and financial services firms almost always carry errors and omissions coverage, but confirm this with your prospective host before your designated sponsor finalizes the DS-2019 approval.
Search for J-1-friendly underwriting roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find U.S. employers actively hosting exchange visitors in finance and insurance operations. Filtering by host history helps you target firms already familiar with the DS-2019 process and structured training plan requirements.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility early
J-1 Intern status requires current enrollment in a degree program or graduation within 12 months. If you already hold a degree and have relevant insurance or finance work experience, you qualify under the Trainee category, which allows stays up to 18 months.
Check whether your country triggers the home residency requirement
Some J-1 participants must return home for two years before changing to certain other visa statuses. If your government financed your exchange or your field appears on the skills list, this requirement applies and can affect your post-program U.S. career planning.
Request a prevailing wage check before accepting an offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for Underwriting Assistant roles in your host city. Your compensation must meet or exceed the prevailing wage your designated sponsor records in the training plan, so verify figures before the offer is finalized.

Find Underwriting Assistant JobsUnderwriting Assistant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Underwriting Assistant role?
Most Underwriting Assistant positions fall under the J-1 Trainee category if you hold a relevant degree and have some professional or internship experience in finance or insurance. If you're currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program, the J-1 Intern category applies instead. The Trainee category permits stays of up to 18 months, making it the more common path for career-stage professionals entering underwriting.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an Underwriting Assistant?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the insurance or financial services firm where you work. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, administers your training plan, and monitors program compliance. The hiring firm is your host employer. You arrange the host employment first, then work with a designated sponsor to complete the visa paperwork.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host J-1 exchange visitors in underwriting?
Migrate Mate lists U.S. employers in finance and insurance that have hosted exchange visitors, letting you focus your search on firms already familiar with the training plan and DS-2019 requirements. Many smaller regional insurers and managing general agents host J-1 Trainees in underwriting support roles but don't advertise this openly, so targeted search tools save significant time.
What does the Training or Internship Placement Plan require for an underwriting position?
The T/IPP must describe, by phase and week, the specific tasks you'll perform, the skills you'll develop, and how each phase connects to your career goals. For an Underwriting Assistant, this typically means sections covering policy intake and data entry, risk assessment support, exposure analysis tools, and regulatory documentation. Your designated sponsor reviews and certifies this plan before issuing the DS-2019, so the host employer needs to invest time drafting it.
Can a J-1 Underwriting Assistant transition to another visa status after the program ends?
Potentially, but the two-year home residency requirement is a significant variable. If it applies to you, you must return home for two years before changing to H-1B, L-1, or most immigrant visa categories. Participants not subject to the requirement can pursue a change of status or apply for a new visa directly. Confirm your status early with your designated sponsor, since this affects long-term U.S. career planning with any host employer.
