Job Description
The University of Indianapolis invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in K-6 Literacy Education. This full-time, 9-month appointment in the School of Education begins in the 2026-2027 school year.
The successful applicant will teach theoretical knowledge and plan and supervise students in practical classroom experiences for programs in Elementary Education, Transition to Teaching, and Literacy Specialists Master’s program, ensuring that future educators are effectively prepared for the multifaceted realities of elementary literacy instruction in today’s schools. The successful applicant must be willing to teach courses on campus, in clinical settings, in online environments, and during evenings or weekends as needed.
Preference will be given to applicants with an earned doctorate in Literacy Education, though literacy specialists with an earned master's degree and specialized or advanced training in literacy instruction will also be considered. Candidates should demonstrate a strong emphasis on early elementary literacy, the Science of Reading, and teaching linguistically and culturally diverse students. In addition, a minimum of three years of teaching literacy in an elementary school is required.
This position is highly collaborative. Therefore, the successful applicant will engage with faculty, students, and school and community partners in a manner that highlights creativity, collegiality, and innovation. An active scholarly research agenda, including publications and presentations, is expected.
REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience
- Teaching literacy in K-6 schools, preferably in urban settings, for three or more years;
- Developing and leading engaging learning & teaching;
- Collaborating both inside and outside the University to develop and deliver instruction that results in improved student learning with a strong emphasis on Early Elementary Literacy and the Science of Reading, and teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students.
Education
- Preferred earned doctorate in Literacy Education, though literacy specialists with an earned master's degree and specialized or advanced training in literacy instruction will also be considered.
License/Certifications/Credentials
- Elementary Teaching License
- Science of Reading Training
- International Dyslexia Association KPEERI Credential
- Indiana Early Literacy License, preferred
- Evidence of excellent communication and collaboration skills, particularly working with groups such as faculty, university students, K-12 partners, K-6 students, and community partners.
