Who's Hiring

Laboratory Jobs in Norfolk: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a laboratory job in Norfolk?
Focus your search on Norfolk's three dominant hiring sectors: military and defense research tied to Naval Station Norfolk, clinical and hospital laboratory work centered on Sentara Norfolk General and EVMS, and environmental testing firms serving the Chesapeake Bay region. Candidates with ASCP certification, experience with automated analyzers, or a background in microbiology or chemistry move fastest here. Networking through the Virginia Association for Clinical Laboratory Science also opens doors locally.
Which companies hire laboratorys in Norfolk?
Companies currently hiring laboratorys in Norfolk include Sentara and Virginia Oncology Associates, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Norfolk's employer mix leans heavily toward hospital systems, military contractors, and environmental compliance firms, reflecting the city's naval and healthcare footprint.
Are there remote laboratory jobs in Norfolk?
Yes, but only selectively. Hands-on bench work, specimen handling, and quality control are inherently on-site, so fully remote roles are rare in laboratory fields overall. About 0% of laboratory openings tied to Norfolk are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, with those roles typically involving data analysis, regulatory documentation, or lab information system management rather than direct specimen work.
How can I get a laboratory job in Norfolk with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Norfolk is a laboratory assistant or phlebotomy technician role at one of the city's hospital systems, particularly Sentara or Bon Secours, which regularly post entry-level openings. EVMS-affiliated training programs produce candidates with local clinical exposure that Norfolk employers recognize. Military base laboratories occasionally hire civilian laboratory support staff with associate degrees. Volunteering or interning through a community college partnership can substitute for direct work history.
