Legal Intern Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a legal intern in Iowa?
Legal intern roles in Iowa are filled by students enrolled in ABA-accredited law schools, typically after completing their first year of study. Iowa does not require a separate state registration to work as a law student intern, but students performing supervised practice in court must comply with Iowa Supreme Court rules governing student practice. Most employers expect a writing sample, law school transcript, and references from faculty or prior legal employers.
Which companies hire legal interns in Iowa?
Iowa legal intern roles are posted by Berkley, ATHENE, and Transamerica and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Iowa's concentration of insurance headquarters, agricultural corporations, and state government agencies makes it a consistent market for legal interns across compliance, litigation support, and regulatory work.
Which Iowa cities have the most legal intern jobs?
Urbandale, Des Moines, and Cedar Rapids are the Iowa cities with the most legal intern openings. Des Moines dominates as the state's financial, insurance, and government center, while Cedar Rapids draws interns to manufacturing and agribusiness legal teams, and Iowa City benefits from proximity to the University of Iowa and its law school, which draws public interest and clinical internship placements.
Are there remote legal intern jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since legal intern work frequently involves in-person court observation, document handling, and attorney supervision. About 43% of legal intern openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting a growing share of research and writing tasks that can be performed off-site. Document review, legal research memos, and contract drafting support are the functions most likely to appear in remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a legal intern in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying through your law school's career services office, which maintains direct relationships with Iowa firms and government agencies that recruit first-year students with no prior legal work history. The Iowa Attorney General's office, Polk County Attorney's office, and Iowa Legal Aid run supervised student programs that accept candidates without prior legal employment. A strong legal writing sample, even from a first-year moot court or legal writing course, is the credential that matters most at the entry level.
Where can I find and apply to legal intern jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to legal intern jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings from employers across Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the rest of the state. Find the roles that fit your law school schedule and practice interests, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
