Tax Intern Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax intern in Iowa?
Most Iowa firms hire tax interns from accredited accounting programs at universities such as the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, or Drake University. Candidates typically apply after completing introductory accounting and federal taxation coursework. Iowa does not require a license to work as an intern, but being on a CPA-track degree path and meeting the Iowa Board of Accountancy's education requirements for eventual licensure makes applicants significantly more competitive.
Which companies hire tax interns in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring tax interns in Iowa include Intuit, KPMG, and H&R Block, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Iowa's concentration of insurance headquarters and regional accounting firms in Des Moines means financial services and public accounting firms account for a large share of available intern positions.
Which Iowa cities have the most tax intern jobs?
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Davenport have the most tax intern openings in Iowa. Des Moines dominates because it is home to major insurance carriers, regional CPA firms, and corporate finance headquarters, while Cedar Rapids draws volume from manufacturing and agribusiness companies with internal tax teams, and Iowa City benefits from proximity to the University of Iowa and the regional professional services firms that recruit there.
Are there remote tax intern jobs in Iowa?
Yes, and more than many entry-level roles, since tax preparation and review work is largely document-based and can be done from a laptop. About 8% of tax intern openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the flexibility many public accounting firms have built into intern programs. Research, data entry, and return preparation tasks are the most commonly offered as remote work, while client meetings and team training tend to stay in person.
How can I get hired as a tax intern in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to the structured intern programs that large Iowa public accounting firms and corporate tax departments run for students with no prior professional experience. Firms like RSM and regional Des Moines practices recruit through Iowa State, University of Iowa, and Drake University career fairs specifically for candidates in their sophomore or junior year. Volunteering through an Iowa VITA site builds real return-preparation experience, and completing the IRS Annual Filing Season Program gives candidates a concrete credential to list before their first internship.
Where can I find and apply to tax intern jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to tax intern jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and across the state. Search the listings to find roles that fit your experience level and availability, then apply directly to the ones that match.
