Software Engineer Intern Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer intern in Iowa?
The most direct path is enrolling in a computer science or software engineering program at an Iowa university, then applying to internship programs in your junior or sophomore year. Iowa does not require a state license to work as a software engineer intern. Employers at companies like those based in Des Moines or Cedar Rapids typically recruit through university career centers at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, so connecting with those offices early is the concrete first step.
Which companies hire software engineer interns in Iowa?
Employers hiring software engineer interns in Iowa right now include CVS Health, Enterprise Mobility, and Hy-Vee, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Iowa's financial services and insurance headquarters, along with its aerospace and agricultural technology firms, tend to offer the most structured intern cohort programs with mentorship and return-offer pipelines.
Which Iowa cities have the most software engineer intern jobs?
Iowa City, Dubuque, and Des Moines have the most software engineer intern openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives the largest share because of its concentration of insurance, financial services, and fintech headquarters, while Iowa City benefits from University of Iowa-affiliated employers and health technology firms, and Cedar Rapids draws interns through its aerospace and advanced manufacturing base anchored by employers like Collins Aerospace.
Are there remote software engineer intern jobs in Iowa?
Yes, and more than most fields, since software engineering work is largely screen-based and collaborative through digital tools. About 50% of software engineer intern openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the flexibility many technology teams extend even to interns. The roles most likely to go fully remote are those focused on web development, data analysis, and software testing rather than embedded systems or hardware-adjacent work.
How can I get hired as a software engineer intern in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to structured intern cohort programs that large Iowa employers run specifically for students with limited professional experience. Principal Financial Group and Collins Aerospace both offer programs designed for early-stage students where a portfolio of personal or academic projects substitutes for prior employment. Iowa State University and the University of Iowa both host career fairs where these employers recruit directly, and completing relevant coursework in data structures or web development before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over those applying without any demonstrated output.
Where can I find and apply to software engineer intern jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to software engineer intern jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings updated in real time. Search for roles that match your skills, location preference, and availability, then apply directly to the ones that fit your background without any extra steps.
