Software Engineer Intern Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer intern in Illinois?
Becoming a software engineer intern in Illinois starts with enrollment in an accredited computer science or software engineering program at a university such as the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern, or DePaul. Illinois does not require a state-issued license to intern in software engineering. Most employers expect a minimum of one completed year of coursework, a portfolio of coding projects, and demonstrated proficiency in at least one programming language before extending an offer.
Which companies hire software engineer interns in Illinois?
Employers hiring software engineer interns in Illinois right now include CNH Industrial, US Foods, and State Farm, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's mix of Fortune 500 headquarters, financial technology firms, and manufacturing companies with growing software divisions makes it one of the more diverse intern hiring markets in the country.
Which Illinois cities have the most software engineer intern jobs?
The Illinois cities with the most software engineer intern openings are Chicago, Oak Brook, and Rosemont. Chicago dominates due to its concentration of fintech, consulting, and enterprise technology firms, while Champaign-Urbana draws substantial recruiting activity from companies targeting University of Illinois talent directly on campus.
Are there remote software engineer intern jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of software engineer intern openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based and collaborative-tool-driven nature of most software development work. The roles most likely to stay fully remote are those focused on front-end development, QA automation, and data analysis rather than hardware-adjacent or lab-embedded positions.
How can I get hired as a software engineer intern in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to structured internship programs at large Illinois employers before completing your first or second year of study. Companies like Motorola Solutions, Allstate, and Discover Financial run early-identification intern cohorts specifically for students without prior industry experience. Building a GitHub portfolio with two or three completed projects in Python, Java, or JavaScript gives candidates a concrete edge. Roles like QA tester, IT support associate, or junior data analyst at Illinois firms are also common lateral starting points that convert into software engineering internships.
