Software Engineer Intern Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer intern in Pennsylvania?
The most direct path is enrollment in an accredited computer science, software engineering, or related degree program at a Pennsylvania university, such as Carnegie Mellon, Penn State, Drexel, or Temple. Software engineering internships in Pennsylvania require no state-issued license. Employers look for demonstrated coding skills through coursework, personal projects, or open-source contributions, and most formal internship programs recruit through university career centers during fall and spring recruiting seasons.
Which companies hire software engineer interns in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring software engineer interns in Pennsylvania right now include Lockheed Martin, United Concordia Dental, and General Dynamics Mission Systems, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Pennsylvania's mix of large financial services firms in the Philadelphia suburbs, healthcare systems, and defense contractors in the greater Pittsburgh region creates consistent intern demand outside the traditional pure-tech sector.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most software engineer intern jobs?
Pittsburgh, King of Prussia, and Pennsylvania have the most software engineer intern openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia's concentration of financial services, healthcare, and media companies drives the largest share of postings, while Pittsburgh's anchor institutions in robotics, autonomous systems, and university-affiliated research make it a strong second market, and suburban corridors like King of Prussia attract interns through defense and consulting firms headquartered there.
Are there remote software engineer intern jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 100% of software engineer intern openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, reflecting how naturally desk-based this work is. Backend development, data engineering, and QA testing roles tend to be the most remote-friendly, while positions involving hardware integration or lab-based systems work typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a software engineer intern in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying through university-run recruiting programs at Pennsylvania employers before completing your degree. Comcast, SEI Investments, and major health systems like Penn Medicine and UPMC run structured internship cohorts that explicitly target students without prior professional experience. Building a GitHub portfolio with academic projects, contributing to open-source work, and completing a relevant certificate in cloud platforms or a specific language gives candidates a measurable edge over those relying on coursework alone.
Where can I find and apply to software engineer intern jobs in Pennsylvania?
