Software Engineer Intern Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software engineer intern in Massachusetts?
The concrete path for most candidates is enrollment in a computer science, electrical engineering, or related degree program at a Massachusetts college or university, followed by targeted applications during campus recruiting cycles. Massachusetts does not require a state-issued license to work as a software engineer intern. Strong candidates build a portfolio of personal or academic projects, contribute to open-source repositories, and complete coding assessments, which are standard screening steps at Massachusetts employers ranging from startups to large corporations.
Which companies hire software engineer interns in Massachusetts?
Companies currently hiring software engineer interns in Massachusetts include L3Harris, Amazon, and S&P Global, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's concentration of technology firms, defense contractors, and biotech companies means internship openings appear across a wide range of industries and company sizes throughout the year.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most software engineer intern jobs?
Andover, Reading, and Cambridge account for the most software engineer intern openings in Massachusetts. The Boston–Cambridge cluster dominates because of its dense concentration of technology companies, research hospitals, and university-affiliated startups, while suburban areas like Waltham and Burlington attract internship volume from large corporate campuses that house the engineering divisions of major employers.
Are there remote software engineer intern jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 0% of software engineer intern openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the day-to-day work involves writing, reviewing, and deploying code from any location. The parts of the role most likely to remain fully remote are backend development, data engineering, and machine learning model work, while internships involving hardware integration or lab-based systems tend to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a software engineer intern in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly through university recruiting programs, since Massachusetts employers such as MathWorks, HubSpot, and the major Boston-area hospital systems run structured internship cohorts specifically designed for students with limited professional experience. Building two or three completed projects on a public code repository substitutes effectively for a work history. Adjacent roles such as IT support technician or quality assurance tester at Massachusetts companies also serve as a common lateral entry point that leads to internship offers in engineering teams.
Where can I find and apply to software engineer intern jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to software engineer intern jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the roles available, identify the ones that match your skills and availability, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
