Tax Intern Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax intern in Texas?
The most direct path is enrolling in an accredited accounting program at a Texas university and applying during your sophomore or junior year. Texas does not require a license to work as a tax intern, but pursuing the CPA pathway matters: the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy oversees CPA licensure, and most firms recruiting interns expect candidates to be on track to meet the state's education hours requirement for the exam. Strong academic performance and relevant coursework in taxation set you apart.
How much do tax interns make in Texas?
Tax interns in Texas earn a median of about $80,920 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $53,380 for the lowest 10% to over $132,040 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax interns in Texas?
Employers hiring tax interns in Texas right now include Apple, Affinius Capital, and Alvarez & Marsal, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy companies, Fortune 500 headquarters, and large regional public accounting firms means intern openings appear across a wide range of industries and firm sizes throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most tax intern jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most tax intern openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its dense concentration of energy sector headquarters and large public accounting offices, Dallas draws volume from corporate tax departments tied to financial services and retail giants headquartered in the Metroplex, and Austin's fast-growing technology and startup ecosystem has steadily expanded demand for tax interns in both public accounting and in-house roles.
Are there remote tax intern jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than many entry-level roles, since tax work is largely document- and software-based. About 11% of tax intern openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though many firms still expect interns to come in during busy season deadlines. Federal and state income tax compliance work and research-focused roles tend to be the most accommodating for remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a tax intern in Texas with little or no experience?
Apply directly to intern programs at the Big Four and large regional firms with Texas offices, which are specifically structured for students who have not yet worked in tax. Firms such as RSM and Grant Thornton run formal intern cohorts from their Dallas and Houston offices. An adjacent campus role in accounting tutoring or a volunteer tax preparer position through a VITA site in Texas builds a practical credential. Being on track toward the Texas CPA hour requirement signals commitment and moves your application forward.
Where can I find and apply to tax intern jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to tax intern jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Texas locations. Search the listings, find roles that match your program, availability, and target city, and apply directly to each one that fits.
