Legal Intern Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a legal intern in Texas?
Becoming a legal intern in Texas requires enrollment in an ABA-accredited law school, as Texas employers and the State Bar of Texas expect candidates to be actively pursuing a Juris Doctor. Most positions open to first- or second-year students who have completed foundational courses in contracts, torts, and civil procedure. Some government and public interest offices require law clerks to register through their own application portals, and many paid internships require compliance with Texas State Bar guidelines on supervised practice.
How much do legal interns make in Texas?
Legal interns in Texas earn a median of about $62,310 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $39,190 for the lowest 10% to over $98,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire legal interns in Texas?
Employers hiring legal interns in Texas right now include Goldman Sachs, Celanese, and Lennox International, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy companies, Fortune 500 headquarters, and large state agencies means internship opportunities extend well beyond traditional law firms into in-house and government legal departments.
Which Texas cities have the most legal intern jobs?
Dallas, Austin, and Houston have the most legal intern openings in Texas. Houston's dominance in energy and international trade law drives a large share of positions, while Dallas attracts corporate and financial services internships tied to its headquarters base, and Austin's growing technology sector and state government presence generate consistent demand for law students interested in regulatory and policy work.
Are there remote legal intern jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since legal internships often involve court observations, in-person client meetings, and supervised document review. About 22% of legal intern openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting a meaningful but minority share of total positions. Research, drafting, and document review tasks are the functions most frequently performed remotely when firms do offer flexible arrangements.
How can I get hired as a legal intern in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for candidates without prior legal work experience is applying directly to the Texas Attorney General's Office, district attorney offices, or legal aid organizations like Lone Star Legal Aid, which run structured programs specifically designed for first-year law students. On-campus interview programs at Texas law schools connect students with Dallas and Houston firms recruiting 1L candidates. Building a writing sample through legal writing coursework, a law review submission, or a clinic assignment is the credential that most consistently opens doors when experience is thin.
Where can I find and apply to legal intern jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to legal intern jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across law firms, corporate legal departments, and government offices. Find the roles that fit your practice interest and year in school, then apply directly to each one.
