As a manufacturing engineering & technical support intern, you prepare calculations and reports, gain experience with engineering systems, integrate tracking plans, and perform analysis of mechanical design choices. You may help test products, interact with various members of the team, and create or modify CAD models. As an intern your responsibilities are limited, and most employers consider gaining experience to be the most important part of your job.
Many engineering interns focus on building professional relationships in the hope of landing a permanent job after graduating. You may need to develop your skills in engineering, CAD software, and prototyping during your paid internship. Previous hands-on work experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
Job Tasks:
- Support engineering process and productivity improvement projects.
- Observe, document, and quantify process activities, lead time & run rates.
- Support 6S and Environment Health and Safety projects.
- Support technical sales and applications engineering.
- Support tool inventory management activities.
- Support quality department improvement projects.

Tips for Your Manufacturing Engineer Internship Search
Apply for summer roles in the fall
Large manufacturers and industrial employers recruit summer interns the preceding fall, often closing cohorts before spring semester starts. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking early and applying as soon as a role fits prevents missing the biggest structured programs.
Build a project portfolio before you apply
Hiring teams at the intern level expect limited work history and look for something concrete instead. Document two or three projects with the tools you used, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MATLAB, lean methods, or fabrication processes, and make the work viewable. A linked CAD portfolio or process-improvement write-up gives recruiters something to assess beyond your transcript.
Work your campus network alongside direct applications
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and recruiters there often move faster for students they meet in person. Professors and career center staff frequently know which manufacturers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to smaller regional employers alongside campus activity widens the pool you can reach.
Practice your technical screen out loud
Manufacturing engineer intern interviews typically include a technical screen covering applied mechanics, tolerancing, or process analysis, sometimes paired with a case question about improving a production line. Practice answering out loud and walking through your reasoning, since interviewers weigh how you think through a problem as much as the final answer you reach.
Target structured rotational and university programs early
Many large manufacturers run formal rotational or university-partnership internship cohorts built to train candidates new to the field. These programs recruit in the fall, fill their first wave fast, and give interns exposure to multiple functions like quality, process, and design. Identify which programs align with your goals and submit in the first application window.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 100% of the manufacturing engineer internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before you search, then filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate so you're only reviewing roles you can actually take.
Manufacturing Engineer Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a manufacturing engineer internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, recruiters at the intern level expect limited experience and want something concrete to assess. A CAD portfolio or documented process-improvement project gives hiring teams exactly that. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often make faster decisions for students they meet in person.
Can a manufacturing engineer internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for manufacturing engineer interns is delivering measurable results on real projects, fitting an open headcount need on the team, and clarifying your interest before the program ends. Position for it, but don't count on it, keep applying to full-time roles in parallel.
When should I apply for manufacturing engineer internships?
Earlier than most students expect. Large manufacturers and industrial employers recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes as early as August or September. Smaller companies, regional manufacturers, and co-op programs post much closer to start dates, so openings appear throughout the year. Checking regularly and applying as soon as a role fits you is the safest approach.
Are manufacturing engineer internships paid?
Most professional manufacturing engineer internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, large manufacturers and defense contractors tend to pay more than small or nonprofit organizations. Where an employer discloses compensation, listings show it directly so you can compare before you apply.
What should a manufacturing engineer internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that name the tools used, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MATLAB, or lean manufacturing methods, and link to or reference a portfolio where the recruiter can see the work. Add relevant coursework, any lab or fabrication experience, and keep everything to one page.
Are there remote manufacturing engineer internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 0% of the manufacturing engineer internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast, so apply early and filter by work type to see them before they close.
What is a co-op program for manufacturing engineers?
A co-op is a structured, alternating-semester program where students rotate between full semesters of coursework and full semesters of paid work at a manufacturing employer. Co-ops are longer than standard summer internships, often lasting one to three semesters, and are common at large manufacturers and defense companies. Programs recruit early and fill quickly, so identify co-op partners through your university and apply in the first wave.
Can international students get manufacturing engineer internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
