R+L Carriers is seeking a Network Optimization Engineer to analyze, design, and continuously improve our transportation lane network. This role is responsible for reviewing freight flows, lane performance, capacity utilization, and service commitments, then modifying lane structures and routing strategies to improve cost efficiency, service reliability, and network balance. The ideal candidate combines strong analytical skills with operational knowledge and can translate data insights into practical network changes.
Job Responsibilities Will Include
- Review and analyze transportation lanes, freight flows, and routing paths to identify optimization opportunities
- Modify lane structures, matrix paths, and routing strategies to improve utilization, cost, and service performance
- Evaluate headhaul/backhaul balance, capacity constraints, and schedule alignment across the network
- Ensure all proposed lane changes maintain service commitments and operational feasibility
- Analyze impacts of reroutes and network changes across upstream and downstream lanes
- Develop recommendations for consolidations, splits, or re-sequencing of lanes
- Partner with operations, linehaul, and planning teams to validate and implement network changes
- Build and maintain network models, dashboards, and performance summaries
- Document network logic, assumptions, and optimization decisions
- Support peak planning, contingency routing, and continuous improvement initiatives
Requirements/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Data Science, Supply Chain, Operations Research, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3+ years of experience in network optimization, transportation planning, or logistics analytics
- Strong analytical skills with experience working in large, complex datasets
- Solid understanding of transportation networks, lane design, and freight routing concepts
- Experience evaluating cost, service, and capacity tradeoffs
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with SQL, Python, or optimization tools preferred
Preferred
- Experience in LTL, parcel, or hub-and-spoke transportation networks
- Familiarity with freight matrix modeling and lane-level performance analysis
- Experience with optimization or simulation tools (e.g., OR tools, network modeling software)
- Knowledge of scheduling, linehaul planning, or dispatch operations
Skills & Competencies
- Data-driven decision maker with strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to see network-wide impacts rather than isolated lane changes
- Clear communicator able to explain complex network logic to operational teams
- Detail-oriented with a continuous improvement mindset
- Comfortable balancing analytical rigor with real-world operational constraints
