Neurosurgeon Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a neurosurgeon in Texas?
To practice as a neurosurgeon in Texas you must obtain a full medical license from the Texas Medical Board, which requires completing medical school, a seven-year accredited neurosurgery residency, and passing the USMLE series. After residency, most Texas employers also expect active board certification or eligibility through the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Many positions, particularly at academic centers, additionally require fellowship training in a subspecialty.
How much do neurosurgeons make in Texas?
Neurosurgeons in Texas earn a median of about $269,800 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,600 for the lowest 10% to over $457,450 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire neurosurgeons in Texas?
Employers hiring neurosurgeons in Texas right now include CHRISTUS Health, Houston Methodist, and Texas Health Resources, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of large academic medical systems and affiliated multispecialty physician groups means that many openings come with structured call schedules, research opportunities, and established neuro-intensive care infrastructure.
Which Texas cities have the most neurosurgeon jobs?
Houston, Fort Worth, and Austin consistently post the most neurosurgeon openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its dense network of Level I trauma centers, the Texas Medical Center, and large integrated health systems, while Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio generate steady demand through their major academic affiliates, regional hospital networks, and growing suburban expansion that requires coverage at newer facilities.
Are there remote neurosurgeon jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Neurosurgery is a hands-on procedural specialty requiring in-person operative and clinical work, so remote roles are uncommon. About 0% of neurosurgeon openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in telehealth neurology consultation, pre-operative assessment, or administrative and medical director roles that do not involve direct surgical care.
How can I get hired as a neurosurgeon in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for a candidate without attending-level experience is applying directly to academic health systems and large multispecialty groups that hire junior attendings or offer structured transition-to-practice arrangements, such as Houston Methodist, UT Southwestern, or Baylor Scott and White. These institutions often bring on newly board-eligible surgeons alongside established faculty, providing mentorship and graduated autonomy. Completing a Texas-based fellowship strengthens your application significantly, and obtaining Texas Medical Board licensure before you apply removes a common bottleneck.
Where can I find and apply to neurosurgeon jobs in Texas?
