Oncology Social Worker Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a oncology social worker in Montana?
You become an oncology social worker in Montana by earning a Master of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program and obtaining licensure through the Montana Board of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors. Entry-level candidates apply for a Licensed Social Worker credential, while clinical roles require the Licensed Clinical Social Worker designation, which involves supervised hours after graduation. Oncology-specific experience is typically built through hospital practicums or post-graduate positions in cancer centers.
Which companies hire oncology social workers in Montana?
Employers hiring oncology social workers in Montana right now include Intermountain Health, Voyage Health, and Benefis Health System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's regional health systems tend to integrate oncology social workers directly into multidisciplinary cancer care teams rather than through staffing agencies.
Which Montana cities have the most oncology social worker jobs?
Kalispell, Butte, and Helena have the most oncology social worker openings in Montana. Billings draws the most volume as the state's largest city and home to Billings Clinic's cancer center, while Missoula and Great Falls follow because of Providence St. Patrick Hospital and Benefis Health System, which both operate dedicated oncology programs that require full-time social work support.
Are there remote oncology social worker jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 40% of oncology social worker openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, which reflects how deeply hands-on the role is across inpatient and clinic settings. The portions of the job most amenable to remote work are follow-up counseling sessions, survivorship check-ins, and care coordination calls conducted through telehealth platforms.
How can I get hired as a oncology social worker in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a hospital-based social work position in a general medical or discharge planning role at a Montana health system like Billings Clinic or Benefis Health System, then transitioning internally into an oncology unit. New MSW graduates should prioritize field placements in oncology or palliative care during their program and pursue the Licensed Social Worker credential through the Montana Board immediately after graduation. Lateral moves from hospice social work or medical case management are common routes into oncology-specific roles.
Where can I find and apply to oncology social worker jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to oncology social worker jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
