Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Biomedical Engineer
Target STEM-designated programs
Your degree must come from a STEM-designated program to qualify for the 24-month extension. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before applying, since this determines whether you get 12 or 36 total months of OPT work authorization.
Focus on medical device and MedTech employers
Companies developing FDA-regulated devices, implants, or diagnostics have established immigration infrastructure and regularly sponsor F-1 engineers. These employers understand STEM OPT timelines and are more likely to file H-1B visa petitions before your authorization expires.
Align your degree to the job description
Biomedical Engineering roles must qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B sponsorship. A degree in biomedical, mechanical, or electrical engineering directly tied to the role strengthens both your OPT authorization and any future visa petition your employer files.
Prioritize roles with regulatory or R&D scope
Positions requiring FDA regulatory knowledge, clinical testing, or research and development are more likely to satisfy specialty occupation standards. These roles also tend to attract employers experienced with visa sponsorship processes for technical engineering hires.
Ask about E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be E-Verify enrolled. Confirm enrollment status during the offer stage, not after. If an employer is not enrolled, the extension cannot be approved and your work authorization timeline shortens significantly.
File your STEM OPT extension application early
USCIS recommends filing at least 90 days before your OPT end date. Submit your I-765 with your updated I-20 as soon as your DSO approves the extension request. Late filing leaves no buffer if USCIS processing runs long.
Biomedical Engineer OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Biomedical Engineering degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes. Biomedical Engineering is a STEM-designated field, so graduates qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the standard 12 months, giving you up to 36 months of post-graduation work authorization. Confirm your program's CIP code with your DSO to verify your specific degree qualifies.
Do Biomedical Engineer roles typically qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Most do, because biomedical engineering positions generally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical discipline. Roles in device design, biomechanics, regulatory affairs, and clinical engineering have strong track records of H-1B approval. Roles with vague degree requirements or generalist scope face more scrutiny from USCIS during adjudication.
What types of employers hire Biomedical Engineers on OPT?
Medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, hospital systems, research universities, and contract research organizations all hire Biomedical Engineers on OPT. Larger MedTech companies with established legal departments are generally more experienced with STEM OPT requirements and H-1B sponsorship timelines. You can browse verified OPT-friendly employers on Migrate Mate.
Can I work in a hospital or clinical setting on OPT as a Biomedical Engineer?
Yes. Hospital systems and academic medical centers regularly employ Biomedical Engineers in roles managing medical equipment, supporting clinical trials, or working in biomedical informatics. These positions qualify for OPT as long as the work is directly related to your degree field. Confirm your DSO approves the role as consistent with your degree before starting.
What happens to my OPT if my employer is acquired or goes through a merger?
If your employer is acquired, your E-Verify enrollment status may change. For STEM OPT, your employer must remain E-Verify enrolled throughout your authorization period. Notify your DSO immediately if ownership changes, and confirm the acquiring entity has active E-Verify enrollment. If enrollment lapses, your STEM OPT extension could be invalidated by USCIS.
