The Opportunity:
We are currently seeking a Bridge Inspector to join our Bridge Inspection Group in our New Albany or Indianapolis, IN or Jacksonville, FL offices. This is an opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure safety by inspecting bridges and related structures, ensuring they meet federal, state, and local requirements. As part of our collaborative team, you’ll play a key role in delivering accurate assessments, well-documented reports, and supporting safe, efficient transportation networks across the region.
What You’ll Do:
As a Bridge Inspector, you will perform hands-on structural safety inspections for various transportation agencies. You’ll also assist in planning and executing inspection programs, coordinating access logistics, and preparing detailed inspection documentation. This role offers a mix of office and fieldwork, with occasional night work and overnight travel assignments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine and fracture-critical bridge and structural safety inspections in accordance with FHWA, state, and agency standards.
- Assist in developing inspection schedules and coordinating with clients and stakeholders to meet project requirements.
- Arrange access equipment (lifts, snoopers, boats, climbing gear) and traffic control setups to ensure safe inspection practices.
- Assist in securing necessary permits, including railroad and agency access, in advance of inspections.
- Collect, document, and evaluate field data; prepare comprehensive inspection reports with findings, photos, and recommendations.
- Identify deficiencies, deterioration, or structural concerns and communicate findings promptly to project managers and clients.
- Support project managers in estimating inspection hours, preparing proposals, and meeting project deadlines.
- Adhere to all company and agency safety standards, including the use of PPE and fall protection equipment.
- Work closely with team members and engineers to develop solutions for repair, rehabilitation, or replacement needs.
- Participate in occasional night work or overnight travel assignments as required by project scope.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Preferred.
- NHI certifications for the inspection of bridges, culverts, highway structures, NSTM’s, and tunnels preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years bridge inspection experience required; familiarity with NBIS standards is a plus.
- Physical ability to work in demanding field environments (heights, confined spaces, outdoor conditions).
- Strong attention to detail with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to meet tight deadlines.
- Willingness and ability to travel overnight as needed.
- Strong experience with Microsoft Office products preferred.
- Experience utilizing web-based software for asset management information input and report generation preferred.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Bridge Inspector
Confirm your role qualifies as STEM OPT
Bridge Inspector positions typically fall under civil or structural engineering CIP codes, making them STEM OPT eligible. Verify your specific job title matches your degree field before accepting an offer to protect your 36-month extension.
Target state DOT and federal agency employers
State Departments of Transportation and federal agencies like FHWA regularly hire bridge inspectors and have established processes for employing OPT students. Government contractors working on infrastructure projects are also strong targets for sponsorship-friendly roles.
Get your certifications early
Many bridge inspector roles require FHWA safety inspection training or state-specific certifications. Completing these before you apply signals job readiness and removes a common employer hesitation about hiring candidates still building their credentials on OPT.
Address OPT proactively with employers
Frame your OPT timeline clearly when you reach the offer stage. Employers in infrastructure often plan projects years out, so explaining your 36-month STEM extension timeline helps them see you as a viable long-term hire worth sponsoring.
Emphasize your engineering degree match
Bridge inspection is a specialty occupation under immigration law, requiring a directly related engineering degree. Highlight your civil, structural, or transportation engineering coursework explicitly on your resume to make the degree-to-role connection obvious for employers and immigration reviewers.
Look for employers with existing H-1B sponsorship history
Engineering firms and infrastructure contractors that have sponsored H-1B visas before are far more likely to continue after your OPT expires. Prioritize companies with a demonstrated track record of retaining international engineers beyond their initial work authorization period.
Bridge Inspector OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Bridge Inspector jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, most bridge inspector roles qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension when your degree is in civil, structural, or transportation engineering. Your employer also needs to be E-Verify enrolled and sign a formal training plan (Form I-983). Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before applying.
Is bridge inspection considered a specialty occupation for visa purposes?
Bridge inspection generally qualifies as a specialty occupation because it requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related engineering field. Roles that require only a certification or general construction background without a specific degree requirement may not meet the threshold, so reviewing the job description carefully matters.
How do I find Bridge Inspector jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is the recommended way to find bridge inspector roles filtered for OPT and visa sponsorship compatibility. Many infrastructure employers post through Migrate Mate specifically because they understand the needs of F-1 students on work authorization, saving you from applying to roles that will reject you at the offer stage.
Can I work for a state agency as an F-1 OPT student?
Yes, state agencies can hire F-1 OPT students because OPT is employer-authorized, not employer-sponsored at that stage. However, some states have restrictions on hiring non-citizens for certain government positions, particularly roles with security clearance requirements. Check the specific agency's eligibility rules before applying.
What happens to my bridge inspector job if my OPT expires before my H-1B is approved?
If you file an H-1B petition before your OPT expires and receive a timely filing receipt, you can continue working for the same employer while the petition is pending. This cap-gap protection covers you through September 30 of that year. Coordinate timing carefully with your DSO and employer's immigration attorney.
