How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Cloud Platform Engineer
Target companies already running cloud infrastructure at scale
Organizations with dedicated platform teams, not just companies that use cloud tools, are far more likely to sponsor. Look for employers with AWS, GCP, or Azure engineering teams large enough to have dedicated infrastructure roles separate from application development.
Get your cloud certifications before you start applying
AWS Solutions Architect, Google Professional Cloud Architect, or Azure Administrator certifications signal technical depth to hiring managers. For OPT students, certifications also strengthen the specialty occupation argument by demonstrating field-specific expertise beyond your degree alone.
Frame your experience around infrastructure as code
Employers sponsoring cloud roles want engineers who work in Terraform, Pulumi, or CloudFormation, not just the console. Quantify your IaC contributions on your resume to differentiate yourself and show you can operate at the level required for H-1B specialty occupation eligibility.
Start your OPT extension paperwork early if you're in STEM
Cloud Platform Engineer roles under CIP codes like Computer Science or Electrical Engineering qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. File your I-765 at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires so you have continuous work authorization through the hiring process.
Be upfront about your timeline with recruiters
Telling a recruiter you have two to three years of OPT authorization remaining changes the sponsorship calculus entirely. Most platform teams can complete H-1B cap filing within that window, so proactively sharing your end date often turns a hesitant employer into a willing one.
Highlight multi-cloud experience to broaden your employer pool
Engineers who can work across AWS, Azure, and GCP are harder to find and easier to justify sponsoring. Even if your primary experience is on one cloud, adding hands-on projects in another substantially increases the number of employers willing to invest in your long-term authorization.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Cloud Platform Engineer roles qualify for STEM OPT extension?
Yes. Cloud Platform Engineer positions almost always qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension because the role typically falls under CIP codes for Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. Your degree must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, and your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Together, these conditions give you up to three years of total OPT authorization.
How do I find Cloud Platform Engineer jobs that sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for OPT-friendly employers, so you can search Cloud Platform Engineer roles without manually screening out companies that don't sponsor. Larger cloud teams at enterprise technology companies and financial services firms tend to have established sponsorship processes. Roles explicitly requiring Terraform, Kubernetes, or CI/CD pipeline experience are strong signals that the position supports specialty occupation classification.
Does a Cloud Platform Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
In most cases, yes. Cloud Platform Engineer positions that require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical field meet the H-1B specialty occupation definition. The key requirement is that the degree must be a normal minimum for entry into the role, not just preferred. Job postings that list a specific technical degree as required rather than preferred are in the strongest position.
Can I work as a Cloud Platform Engineer on OPT if my degree is in electrical engineering rather than computer science?
Yes. Electrical engineering is on the STEM Designated Degree Program List and directly supports cloud infrastructure roles involving hardware-software integration, embedded systems, or network architecture. The degree-to-job relationship needs to be reasonable but does not need to be an exact match. A cloud role requiring network fundamentals, systems architecture, or hardware-layer knowledge maps well to an electrical engineering background.
What should I tell an employer who is concerned about the H-1B lottery after my OPT expires?
With STEM OPT, you have up to three years of post-graduation work authorization, which typically covers at least two H-1B cap registration cycles. Employers who miss the lottery in year one can try again in year two before your OPT expires. Some cloud employers also use cap-exempt research institution arrangements or explore O-1A classification for engineers with strong publication or open-source contribution records as a fallback.
