How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Digital Designer
Lead with a portfolio, not your resume
Hiring managers for digital design roles make decisions based on work samples first. A well-organized portfolio showcasing UI, brand, or motion projects signals competence faster than any resume bullet point and reduces hesitation around OPT authorization.
Clarify your OPT timeline upfront
Let employers know exactly how long your OPT authorization lasts and whether STEM OPT extension is available to you. Framing your 12 to 36 months of work authorization clearly removes uncertainty that might otherwise slow down hiring decisions.
Target companies with in-house design teams
Companies with dedicated design departments, like product-led tech firms or large consumer brands, are more likely to have established processes for hiring OPT candidates than small agencies that rarely navigate work authorization paperwork.
Emphasize tools that signal immediate productivity
Proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping tools tells employers you can contribute from day one. Listing specific software expertise reduces perceived onboarding risk, which matters when an employer is weighing OPT-related administrative effort.
Use your degree field as an eligibility anchor
OPT employment must be directly related to your degree. A design role tied to a visual communication or interaction design degree is a clean match. Be ready to articulate that connection explicitly in interviews if your degree title is unconventional.
Research which employers have sponsored design roles before
Past sponsorship behavior is a reliable indicator of future willingness. Browse Migrate Mate to find digital design jobs posted by employers who actively hire OPT and visa-sponsored candidates, saving time by focusing on genuinely open opportunities.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Digital Designer jobs qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes, Digital Designer roles typically qualify for OPT as long as the work is directly related to your degree field, such as graphic design, visual communication, or interaction design. The position needs to use the knowledge from your degree in a meaningful way. If your degree is in a STEM-designated field like human-computer interaction, you may also be eligible for a 24-month STEM OPT extension.
Can I use my STEM OPT extension for a Digital Designer role?
It depends on your degree's CIP code. Digital design graduates with degrees in computer science, information systems, or human-computer interaction often qualify for STEM OPT extension. Graduates with degrees in fine arts or graphic design under non-STEM CIP codes generally do not. Check your degree's designated CIP code with your DSO before assuming extension eligibility, as this significantly affects your total authorized work period.
How should I explain my OPT status to a Digital Designer employer?
Be direct and factual. Tell them you have F-1 OPT work authorization valid for 12 months, the start date, and whether you qualify for a STEM OPT extension. Emphasize that no sponsorship is required during your OPT period and that you can begin working immediately once your EAD card is issued. Most design employers are unfamiliar with OPT, so clear, confident framing makes a significant difference.
What happens to my Digital Designer job if my OPT expires before an H-1B is approved?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your OPT expires and you have a timely filed extension or cap-gap protection, you may be able to continue working through cap-gap. Cap-gap automatically extends your OPT status and employment authorization while the H-1B petition is pending. Confirm the timing carefully with your DSO and an immigration attorney to avoid any gap in work authorization.
Where can I find Digital Designer jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and lists digital design roles from employers who are open to hiring candidates on work authorization. Rather than filtering through general job boards where OPT status is often unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces positions where sponsorship and OPT are already part of the employer's hiring consideration, saving significant time in your job search.
