Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Facilities Engineer
Target employers with existing H-1B sponsorship history
Large facilities management firms, hospital systems, and university campuses file H-1B visa petitions regularly. Employers already familiar with the process are far more likely to extend OPT and sponsor your visa than those encountering it for the first time.
Emphasize your engineering degree field on applications
Facilities Engineer roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a degree in mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering. Clearly aligning your degree field with the role strengthens both your OPT STEM extension eligibility and future H-1B petition arguments.
Apply before your OPT end date, not after
Employers need lead time to file an H-1B petition or support a STEM OPT extension. Starting your job search at least four months before your current OPT expires gives both sides enough runway to complete the process without authorization gaps.
Get your STEM OPT extension filed early
Apply for your 24-month STEM extension at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Your DSO needs processing time and your school must be on the SEVP-certified list. Late filings risk a gap in work authorization that complicates your employment.
Highlight cross-functional project experience in your resume
Facilities Engineers who can show experience coordinating with construction, procurement, and operations teams are stronger H-1B candidates. Demonstrating that the role requires specialized knowledge makes it easier for employers to justify the specialty occupation classification.
Use Migrate Mate to find OPT-friendly employers
Browsing Facilities Engineer listings on Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have sponsored visas before. Focusing your applications on that pool removes much of the uncertainty around whether an employer is willing to support your work authorization after OPT.
Facilities Engineer OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Facilities Engineer jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Most do, provided your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or civil engineering. The CIP code on your degree must appear on the Department of Homeland Security's STEM Designated Degree Program List. Confirm with your DSO before applying, since job title alone does not determine eligibility.
What types of employers hire Facilities Engineers on OPT?
Hospitals, universities, pharmaceutical manufacturers, data center operators, and large commercial real estate firms are among the most active hirers. These organizations manage complex physical infrastructure and need engineers full time, which also makes them more willing to invest in H-1B sponsorship once your OPT period ends. Migrate Mate filters listings by sponsorship history to help you identify them.
Does a Facilities Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It generally does when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline and the duties involve technical systems like HVAC, electrical, or structural engineering. Generic facilities or maintenance roles without a degree requirement can face RFEs. Having a detailed job description that maps degree requirements to specific duties strengthens the petition considerably.
Can I work as a Facilities Engineer through a staffing agency on OPT?
Yes. Working through a staffing or contract engineering firm is permitted on OPT as long as the work is directly related to your degree field and you are paid by the employer, not unpaid. Your I-983 training plan for STEM OPT must still be completed by the end client if you are placed at a third-party site.
How early should I start applying for Facilities Engineer jobs before my OPT expires?
At least four months before your OPT end date. Facilities Engineer roles often involve background checks, site access clearances, and multi-round interviews that extend the hiring timeline. If H-1B sponsorship is part of the plan, the employer also needs time to engage an attorney and prepare the petition before the April 1 filing window.
