Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Hospitality
Target hotel chains with established HR infrastructure
Large hotel groups like Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt have dedicated HR teams familiar with OPT authorization. Smaller boutique properties often lack the resources to navigate work authorization paperwork, making enterprise employers a more reliable starting point.
Clarify your OPT end date upfront
Hospitality hiring cycles move fast. Before your first interview, confirm your OPT start date and expiration. Employers need to know how long you can work without additional sponsorship, since many roles involve training periods that could overlap with your authorization window.
Emphasize management track roles over hourly positions
OPT is authorized for employment directly related to your degree. Management trainee, operations coordinator, and front office supervisor roles align more clearly with hospitality degrees than general service positions, making authorization easier to justify and renewals more defensible.
Ask about H-1B sponsorship timelines during the offer stage
If your goal is long-term U.S. employment, raise H-1B visa sponsorship before accepting an offer, not after. Some hospitality employers sponsor selectively for corporate or management roles but not for property-level positions, so knowing this early saves you time.
Document how your role connects to your degree field
USCIS requires OPT employment to be directly related to your major. Keep a written record showing how your hospitality role uses skills from your coursework. This documentation protects you if your authorization is ever questioned during a routine check.
Check whether your hospitality degree qualifies for STEM OPT extension
Some hospitality management and tourism programs hold STEM designation under CIP codes in management or data analytics. A 24-month STEM OPT extension dramatically changes your value to employers, so verify eligibility with your DSO before your standard OPT expires.
Hospitality OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work in hospitality on OPT if my degree is in hotel management?
Yes. A hotel management or hospitality management degree directly supports OPT employment in roles like front office operations, food and beverage management, and event coordination. The key requirement is that your job duties connect meaningfully to your field of study. Roles that are purely service-oriented without a management or operational component may not meet the USCIS standard for authorized OPT employment.
Do hospitality employers commonly sponsor OPT students?
Sponsorship rates vary significantly by employer type. Corporate hotel chains and large resort groups are more likely to sponsor OPT students, particularly for management trainee programs and salaried operational roles. Independent restaurants and boutique properties rarely have the HR infrastructure to manage work authorization. Migrate Mate lists hospitality employers who are actively open to OPT candidates, which helps you avoid wasting time on applications that won't move forward.
Does hospitality qualify for a STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your specific program's CIP code. Traditional hospitality and hotel administration degrees are generally not STEM-designated. However, some programs in hospitality analytics, tourism technology, or hospitality business management have received STEM designation. Check your I-20 and confirm with your DSO whether your degree qualifies. If it does, you're eligible for an additional 24 months of work authorization, which significantly improves your sponsorship options.
Can I work part-time in hospitality during my pre-completion OPT?
Yes, but only up to 20 hours per week while school is in session. Pre-completion OPT hours are capped to protect your full-time student status. Once you've graduated, post-completion OPT removes that restriction and allows full-time employment. Most hospitality management programs authorize post-completion OPT, which is when the majority of salaried roles and management trainee positions become available to you.
What happens to my OPT status if I'm laid off from a hospitality job?
You have a cumulative 90-day unemployment allowance during your standard OPT period. If your employment ends, that clock starts immediately. You're required to report any change in employer to your DSO within 10 days. For STEM OPT holders, the unemployment allowance is 150 days total. Use any gap period strategically to search for a new role quickly, and keep your DSO informed throughout the process.
