Confirm your field of study aligns
Housekeeping roles can qualify under hospitality management, facilities management, or environmental services programs. Confirm your DSO agrees the position relates to your degree before accepting an offer. Misaligned employment can jeopardize your OPT status.
Start your OPT application early
USCIS can take up to 90 days to process your EAD card. Apply as soon as your DSO approves your I-20 endorsement. Starting early prevents gaps between your program end date and your authorized employment start date.
Document the connection to your degree
Keep a written explanation of how your housekeeping role connects to your field of study. If USCIS or your DSO ever asks, a clear one-page summary describing relevant coursework and skills will protect your authorization.
Clarify your work authorization upfront
Tell employers you hold OPT work authorization before interviews go far. Many hospitality employers are already familiar with OPT because the industry regularly hires international graduates from hotel management programs. Early clarity saves everyone time.
Track your unemployment days carefully
OPT allows a maximum of 90 unemployment days. If you leave one housekeeping role before securing another, those days count against your limit. Report employment changes to your DSO promptly and keep records of your start and end dates.
Consider employers with prior OPT experience
Large hotel chains and healthcare systems have dedicated HR teams that regularly process OPT and H-2B visa workers. These employers understand I-9 verification with an EAD card and are less likely to hesitate over your immigration status.
Housekeeping OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work in housekeeping on OPT?
Yes, if the role connects to your field of study. Hospitality management, hotel and restaurant management, and facilities or environmental services graduates can typically qualify. Your DSO must agree the position relates to your degree before you begin. Working in an unrelated role puts your OPT authorization at risk.
Do housekeeping employers need to sponsor my visa?
No sponsorship is required during your OPT period. Your EAD card is your work authorization, and employers simply verify it during I-9 onboarding. If you want to stay in the U.S. long-term after OPT, you would need an employer willing to sponsor an H-2B, H-1B visa, or other visa, which is a separate conversation.
Where can I find housekeeping jobs that accept OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists housekeeping and hospitality roles from employers familiar with OPT work authorization. Searching on Migrate Mate lets you filter for positions where international students are already welcome, reducing the back-and-forth with employers who are unfamiliar with EAD cards or OPT timelines.
Does a part-time housekeeping job count toward my OPT requirements?
Yes. USCIS requires at least 20 hours of work per week to count as authorized OPT employment. Part-time housekeeping work at 20 or more hours qualifies. Fewer than 20 hours per week is considered unemployment under OPT rules and counts against your 90-day unemployment limit.
What happens to my OPT if I switch housekeeping employers?
You can change employers during OPT, but you must report the change to your DSO within 10 days so they can update SEVIS. Any gap between jobs counts as unemployment days. You do not need a new EAD card when switching employers, as long as your existing card is still valid and the new role relates to your field of study.
