Obtain your CDL-A before applying
Most tanker driving positions require a Commercial Driver's License Class A before employers will consider you. Start CDL training early in your OPT window so licensing delays don't eat into your authorized work period.
Add a HAZMAT endorsement to stand out
Employers transporting petroleum, chemicals, or industrial fluids strongly prefer drivers with HAZMAT endorsements. The TSA background check takes several weeks, so apply for this endorsement well before your job search begins.
Target carriers with established OPT hiring processes
Large national carriers and fuel distribution companies often have HR teams familiar with OPT authorization. Smaller regional operators may be less experienced with work authorization requirements, which can slow or complicate your onboarding process significantly.
Highlight your clean driving record prominently
Tanker employers run Motor Vehicle Record checks on every candidate. A spotless MVR with no violations, suspensions, or DUIs signals low insurance risk to employers and meaningfully increases your chances of clearing the hiring process quickly.
Understand your OPT end date before accepting routes
Long-haul tanker contracts can span months. Confirm your OPT expiration and STEM OPT eligibility before committing to multi-month assignments so neither you nor your employer faces mid-contract work authorization gaps.
Clarify H-1B sponsorship intent early in interviews
Ask directly whether the employer has sponsored H-1B visas for drivers before. Some carriers in chemical and petroleum transport have done this successfully. Knowing upfront saves time and avoids accepting a role with no long-term immigration pathway.
Tanker Driver OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can F-1 OPT students legally work as Tanker Drivers in the United States?
Yes. F-1 students on OPT can work as Tanker Drivers as long as the role is directly related to their field of study. Transportation, logistics, engineering, and environmental science degrees are common qualifying fields. Your Employment Authorization Document must be valid before you begin driving commercially for any employer.
Do Tanker Driver employers commonly sponsor visas for OPT workers?
Sponsorship is less common in transportation than in tech or finance, but it does happen. Large carriers in petroleum, chemical distribution, and food-grade liquid transport have filed H-1B petitions for drivers with specialized skills or engineering backgrounds. Targeting companies with prior sponsorship history improves your odds considerably. You can browse OPT-friendly tanker roles on Migrate Mate.
Is a CDL-A required to apply for Tanker Driver jobs on OPT?
Yes, virtually all commercial tanker positions require a valid CDL-A. You must also pass a DOT physical examination and drug screening. If you're on a student visa and obtaining your CDL during your studies or early OPT, confirm your state DMV's eligibility rules for international students before scheduling your skills test.
Does a STEM OPT extension apply to Tanker Driver positions?
STEM OPT extensions are available only for graduates with STEM-designated degrees. A Tanker Driver role could qualify if your degree is in a STEM field such as chemical engineering, environmental science, or transportation systems, and the employer confirms the position uses that degree directly. The employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify to participate in the STEM OPT extension program.
What should I know about background checks as an OPT student applying for Tanker Driver roles?
Tanker employers run thorough background checks including Motor Vehicle Records, criminal history, and TSA security threat assessments for HAZMAT endorsements. Immigration status does not disqualify you, but you must provide your EAD and valid passport for I-9 verification. Delays in any of these checks can push back your start date, so initiate paperwork as early as possible.
