Patient Navigator Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a patient navigator in California?
Most patient navigator roles in California require at minimum an associate or bachelor's degree in public health, health education, social work, or nursing. While California does not issue a single state license specifically for patient navigators, employers in oncology commonly prefer candidates who hold or are working toward the Oncology Nurse Navigator Certification or a Community Health Worker certificate recognized through the California Department of Public Health. Gaining experience in a community clinic or Medi-Cal plan sets a strong foundation.
How much do patient navigators make in California?
Patient navigators in California earn a median of about $60,390 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,470 for the lowest 10% to over $119,990 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire patient navigators in California?
Employers hiring patient navigators in California right now include HealthRIGHT 360, Loma Linda University Health, and SCAN Health Plan, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health systems and federally qualified health centers tend to post the most consistent openings given the state's broad Medi-Cal population and emphasis on care coordination under value-based contracts.
Which California cities have the most patient navigator jobs?
Loma Linda, Orange, and Palo Alto have the most patient navigator openings in California right now. Los Angeles dominates because of its concentration of major health systems, county hospitals, and community health centers serving one of the largest uninsured and Medi-Cal populations in the country, while San Francisco and San Diego benefit from large academic medical centers and robust network of federally qualified health centers that rely on navigators for complex case management.
Are there remote patient navigator jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields. About 3% of patient navigator openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that much of the role involves in-person patient contact, clinic coordination, and community outreach. The portions of the role most likely to be performed remotely are telephonic follow-up, care plan documentation, and virtual benefits counseling for established patients.
How can I get hired as a patient navigator in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a community health worker or patient services representative role at a federally qualified health center or county health department, which are abundant across California and frequently promote from within. Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health run structured new-hire and development programs that bring in candidates from adjacent roles such as medical assistant, social services aide, or eligibility specialist. Completing a California Department of Public Health-recognized Community Health Worker certificate program substantially strengthens applications for candidates without direct navigation experience.
Where can I find and apply to patient navigator jobs in California?
You can find and apply to patient navigator jobs in California directly on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across hospital systems, community health centers, and specialty practices. Search the listings, find the roles that match your background and target location, and apply directly to each employer without needing to create a profile or sign up.
