Payroll Clerk Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a payroll clerk in New York?
New York does not require a state-issued license to work as a payroll clerk, so the path runs through education and employer-recognized credentials. Most entry-level roles require at least a high school diploma, and many New York employers prefer an associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or a related field. Earning the Fundamental Payroll Certification from the American Payroll Association strengthens any application and is widely recognized by New York City and upstate employers alike.
Which companies hire payroll clerks in New York?
Employers hiring payroll clerks in New York right now include Costco Wholesale and The Academy Charter School, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of large hospital systems, financial institutions, and public-sector organizations means steady, recurring demand for payroll support across the state.
Which New York cities have the most payroll clerk jobs?
Uniondale, Brooklyn, and New Rochelle have the most payroll clerk openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its extraordinary density of corporate headquarters, hospital networks, and government agencies, while Buffalo and Albany generate consistent demand through regional healthcare systems, state government offices, and manufacturing operations that require regular payroll processing.
Are there remote payroll clerk jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many administrative roles, because payroll processing is largely software-driven and document-based. About 0% of payroll clerk openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how widely employers have adopted cloud-based payroll platforms. The most remote-friendly tasks are payroll data entry, report generation, and employee records management, while onboarding coordination and compliance audits more often require an in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a payroll clerk in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounts receivable, billing, or administrative assistant role at a mid-size New York employer, then a lateral move into payroll once you have demonstrated numeracy and software skills. Large New York City employers such as hospital systems and municipal agencies regularly post junior payroll assistant openings that accept candidates with no direct payroll history. Completing the Fundamental Payroll Certification before applying shows initiative and gives you a concrete credential that separates you from other entry-level candidates.
Where can I find and apply to payroll clerk jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to payroll clerk jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York City, Buffalo, Albany, and other markets statewide. Find a role that fits and apply directly from the listing.
