Accounting Associate Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an accounting associate in New York?
Most accounting associate roles in New York require at least an associate degree in accounting or finance, though a bachelor's degree strengthens your candidacy significantly at larger firms. New York does not require a state license to work as an accounting associate, but candidates pursuing a CPA credential must meet New York State Education Department requirements, including coursework and supervised experience. Starting in accounts payable, payroll, or bookkeeping is the most common entry path.
Which companies hire accounting associates in New York?
New York accounting associate roles are posted by Labella Associates, SS&C, and IQ-EQ and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's density of financial institutions, Big Four and regional accounting firms, real estate companies, and healthcare systems means hiring is spread across both large employers and mid-size firms throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most accounting associate jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Rochester have the most accounting associate openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its concentration of financial institutions, corporate headquarters, and public accounting firms, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand from regional banks, state government agencies, healthcare systems, and universities that maintain year-round accounting staff.
Are there remote accounting associate jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields, since accounting associate work is largely desk-based and document-driven. About 58% of accounting associate openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to distributed work. Tasks like accounts payable processing, reconciliations, and financial reporting are most commonly offered in remote or hybrid arrangements, while roles requiring on-site document handling or in-person audit support tend to stay fully in-office.
How can I get hired as an accounting associate in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or part-time bookkeeping role completed during your degree, since New York City firms, regional CPA practices in Buffalo and Albany, and large institutions like New York-Presbyterian and the City University of New York system regularly bring on accounting students and recent graduates for support roles. Applying to accounts payable clerk or junior bookkeeper positions gives you a direct lateral move into an accounting associate title. Completing the first parts of the CPA exam pathway through the New York State Education Department signals commitment and gives you a genuine edge over other entry-level candidates.
Where can I find and apply to accounting associate jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to accounting associate jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York City, Buffalo, Albany, and the rest of the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly from each listing.
