Pharmacist Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pharmacist in Maine?
To become a pharmacist in Maine, you must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited program, complete the required internship hours, and pass both the NAPLEX and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination for Maine. You then apply for licensure through the Maine Board of Pharmacy. Graduates who completed their education out of state can apply for licensure by endorsement if they hold an active license from another state.
How much do pharmacists make in Maine?
Pharmacists in Maine earn a median of about $140,930 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $101,360 for the lowest 10% to over $166,810 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire pharmacists in Maine?
Employers hiring pharmacists in Maine right now include Hannaford, Shaw's, and MaineHealth, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maine's largest health systems and regional pharmacy chains tend to post the most consistent volume, particularly for clinical and retail roles.
Which Maine cities have the most pharmacist jobs?
Auburn, Bangor, and Augusta account for the most pharmacist openings in Maine. Portland anchors the market as the state's largest city and home to major MaineHealth facilities, while Bangor draws volume through Northern Light Health's flagship hospital and surrounding regional clinics, and smaller cities like Lewiston and Auburn contribute through community pharmacies and federally qualified health centers.
Are there remote pharmacist jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. About 100% of pharmacist openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the hands-on, patient-facing nature of most pharmacy work. The roles most likely to allow remote arrangements are telepharmacy supervision, utilization review, and medication therapy management consulting positions.
How can I get hired as a pharmacist in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to pharmacy residency programs, particularly PGY-1 programs run through MaineHealth or Northern Light Health, which are designed for new graduates without independent practice experience. Community health centers and independent pharmacies across Maine also hire new pharmacists as staff pharmacists where they work alongside experienced clinicians. Holding an active Maine Board of Pharmacy license and completing an APPE rotation at a Maine site before graduation strengthens your application considerably.
