Portfolio Manager Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a portfolio manager job in Chicago?
Target the Loop and River North, where Chicago's largest asset managers, insurance holding companies, and private equity firms concentrate their investment teams. Candidates with CFA designations and experience in fixed income or multi-asset allocation tend to stand out in this market. Building relationships through Chicago CFA Society events and targeting mid-size independent asset managers, which hire steadily and value generalist depth, gives you a practical edge beyond the major institutional names.
Which companies hire portfolio managers in Chicago?
Employers hiring portfolio managers in Chicago right now include Fifth Third Bank, Mars, and Associated Bank, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's hiring base is unusually broad, mixing global insurance conglomerates, regional wealth management firms, and futures-oriented trading houses that reflect the city's deep capital markets roots.
Are there remote portfolio manager jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the role type. Portfolio management work that involves direct client contact, trading desk oversight, or alternative assets tends to stay on-site, while quantitative and model-driven roles are more remote-friendly. About 50% of portfolio manager openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with hybrid schedules most common at asset managers headquartered in the Loop. Purely quantitative or analytical seats at fintech and insurance firms offer the strongest remote flexibility.
How can I get a portfolio manager job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is through an investment analyst or associate role at one of the city's mid-size registered investment advisers or insurance asset management arms, which run smaller teams and promote from within more actively than large nationals. Roles in portfolio operations, performance reporting, or model maintenance at firms in the Loop frequently serve as lateral bridges into a portfolio management seat. A CFA Level I pass and hands-on experience with Bloomberg or FactSet strengthens any Chicago application considerably.
Which industries hire the most portfolio managers in Chicago?
Chicago portfolio manager roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Investment & Asset Management, and Insurance, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's position as a global center for derivatives, insurance capital management, and institutional fixed income means those sectors generate consistent, year-round demand that outlasts broader hiring cycles.
