Tax Expert Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax expert in Illinois?
The most direct path is earning a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field and then obtaining a Certified Public Accountant license through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting the state's education and experience hours. Some employers also value the Enrolled Agent credential issued by the IRS, which allows unlimited practice before the agency and requires no state-specific license beyond passing the three-part Special Enrollment Examination.
How much do tax experts make in Illinois?
Tax experts in Illinois earn a median of about $54,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $33,030 for the lowest 10% to over $76,150 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax experts in Illinois?
Employers hiring tax experts in Illinois right now include Intuit, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and major public accounting firms in the Chicago metro means that both in-house corporate tax departments and regional CPA practices post openings throughout the year.
Which Illinois cities have the most tax expert jobs?
Chicago, Joliet, and Des Plaines lead Illinois for tax expert openings. Chicago drives the bulk of demand through its dense cluster of corporate headquarters, financial services firms, and Big Four accounting offices, while Naperville and Rosemont draw steady hiring from the large suburban corporate campuses and regional accounting practices that have relocated or expanded outside the city core.
Are there remote tax expert jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. Tax work is largely document-driven and software-based, making it well suited to remote arrangements. About 0% of tax expert openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how broadly accounting employers have adopted flexible schedules since the shift in professional services norms. Federal and state compliance roles and tax research positions tend to be the most consistently remote.
How can I get hired as a tax expert in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is applying to staff tax associate or tax associate roles at Chicago-area public accounting firms, many of which run structured new-graduate hiring programs specifically targeting candidates who have passed or are sitting for the CPA exam. Large Illinois employers such as RSM, Grant Thornton, and regional firms like Plante Moran recruit directly from Illinois accounting programs and accept candidates without prior full-time experience. Moving laterally from an accounts payable, bookkeeping, or financial analyst role is also a recognized path, and holding an active Enrolled Agent designation or having completed a tax clinic through an Illinois university gives candidates a measurable edge over other entry-level applicants.
Where can I find and apply to tax expert jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to tax expert jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings from employers actively hiring. Search the listings for roles that match your experience and credentials, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
