Tax Expert Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax expert in Texas?
The standard path in Texas is earning a CPA license through the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, which requires a bachelor's degree with sufficient accounting and business coursework, passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam, and completing the required hours of supervised experience. Some tax expert roles do not require a CPA but favor candidates who hold an Enrolled Agent credential issued by the IRS, which is recognized statewide and allows representation before tax authorities.
How much do tax experts make in Texas?
Tax experts in Texas earn a median of about $47,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $31,110 for the lowest 10% to over $86,950 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax experts in Texas?
Employers hiring tax experts in Texas right now include Intuit, Houlihan Lokey, and Baker Tilly US, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy company headquarters, large regional banks, and Big Four accounting offices creates consistent demand for tax professionals at all levels.
Which Texas cities have the most tax expert jobs?
Dallas, Amarillo, and Wichita Falls have the most tax expert openings in Texas. Houston leads because of the density of energy and petrochemical corporate headquarters requiring specialized tax teams, Dallas draws volume from financial services and Fortune 500 back-office operations, and Austin's rapid growth in technology and venture-backed companies has created increasing demand for tax professionals with corporate and equity compensation experience.
Are there remote tax expert jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields, because tax analysis and compliance work is largely document-driven and desk-based. About 7% of tax expert openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to off-site work. Tax research, return preparation, and provision work are the functions most commonly offered remotely, while roles requiring direct client contact or in-person audit support are more likely to be on-site.
How can I get hired as a tax expert in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a public accounting firm at the staff associate level, where firms including the Big Four offices in Houston and Dallas run structured new-graduate programs that rotate associates through tax practice areas. Candidates who have passed one or more CPA exam sections gain a clear edge during recruiting. Adjacent roles such as bookkeeper, accounts payable specialist, or payroll analyst at Texas companies also provide a route in, as employers frequently promote from within when a candidate shows initiative toward CPA licensure.
Where can I find and apply to tax expert jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to tax expert jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers actively hiring. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly through each listing.
