Principal Devops Engineer Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal devops engineer in Kentucky?
The principal devops engineer role in Kentucky has no state-issued license or board exam, so the path runs through experience and credentials. Most Kentucky employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, followed by a sustained progression through devops and infrastructure roles. Certifications from AWS, Google Cloud, or the Linux Foundation carry weight with Kentucky hiring managers, particularly in healthcare technology and financial services firms concentrated in Louisville and Lexington.
How much do principal devops engineers make in Kentucky?
Principal devops engineers in Kentucky earn a median of about $109,010 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,310 for the lowest 10% to over $168,110 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire principal devops engineers in Kentucky?
Companies currently hiring principal devops engineers in Kentucky include GE Appliances, Jabil, and Humana, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kentucky's concentration of health-tech, logistics, and financial services firms means openings at this level tend to require experience with regulated data environments and large-scale distributed systems.
Which Kentucky cities have the most principal devops engineer jobs?
Louisville, Florence, and Kentucky account for the largest share of principal devops engineer openings in Kentucky. Louisville drives volume through its dense cluster of health insurers, hospital systems, and regional corporate headquarters, while Lexington's university medical center and growing tech sector generate consistent demand, and the Northern Kentucky corridor benefits from its proximity to Cincinnati's broader enterprise technology market.
Are there remote principal devops engineer jobs in Kentucky?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 86% of principal devops engineer openings tied to Kentucky are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of this role centers on cloud platforms, pipeline tooling, and cross-team coordination rather than on-site infrastructure. Cloud architecture and platform engineering responsibilities are the most consistently remote-eligible parts of the role.
How can I get hired as a principal devops engineer in Kentucky with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a junior systems administrator, cloud support engineer, or site reliability associate role at one of Kentucky's large technology employers or health systems. Humana and several Louisville-area financial institutions run structured associate technology programs that accept candidates with foundational cloud certifications and a strong portfolio of personal or open-source infrastructure projects. Building demonstrable experience with Terraform or Kubernetes and earning a recognized cloud associate certification will move an entry-level candidate ahead of peers applying for stepping-stone roles that feed into senior devops tracks.
