Principal Engineer Jobs in Minneapolis: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a principal engineer job in Minneapolis?
The strongest path into a principal engineer role in Minneapolis is through the city's healthcare technology and medical device ecosystem, which clusters around the Marq and Midtown corridors, alongside financial services firms concentrated downtown. Candidates who combine deep distributed systems or embedded software experience with cross-functional leadership stand out most. Building a portfolio that shows architecture decisions at scale, not just individual contributions, is the edge local hiring managers consistently look for.
Which companies hire principal engineers in Minneapolis?
Employers hiring principal engineers in Minneapolis right now include Medtronic, General Mills, and Allianz, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. The local market is anchored by large healthcare and insurance organizations alongside a growing base of mid-size fintech and enterprise software companies, many headquartered in or just outside downtown Minneapolis.
Are there remote principal engineer jobs in Minneapolis?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the role. About 60% of principal engineer openings tied to Minneapolis are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with the highest flexibility in software architecture and platform engineering positions. Roles tied to medical device development or on-site infrastructure work tend to require regular in-person presence at facilities in and around Minneapolis.
How can I get a principal engineer job in Minneapolis with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is targeting senior engineer roles at Minneapolis-based healthcare technology or fintech companies, where internal promotion to principal is common after demonstrating system-level thinking. Local employers often look for candidates who have led technical design reviews or mentored other engineers, even informally. Contributing to architecture decisions on smaller teams at mid-size Minneapolis companies builds the visibility that leads to a principal engineer title more quickly than waiting for an opening at a large enterprise.
Which industries hire the most principal engineers in Minneapolis?
Most principal engineer openings in Minneapolis sit in Medical Devices and Distribution & Wholesale, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Minneapolis's concentration of major health systems, insurance carriers, and regional financial institutions creates steady demand for senior technical leadership at a scale few comparable-size cities can match.
