Principal Software Engineer Jobs in Nebraska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal software engineer in Nebraska?
Principal software engineer roles in Nebraska do not require a state-issued license or certification. The typical path runs from a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering through progressively senior individual-contributor roles, with most Nebraska employers expecting candidates to have led major architecture initiatives before reaching the principal level. Strong candidates often hold cloud certifications and can demonstrate technical leadership across multiple teams or systems.
How much do principal software engineers make in Nebraska?
Principal software engineers in Nebraska earn a median of about $110,900 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,520 for the lowest 10% to over $158,720 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire principal software engineers in Nebraska?
Companies currently hiring principal software engineers in Nebraska include FMNE Insurance Company, Saicon, and Northrop Grumman, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Nebraska's insurance, financial services, and logistics sectors generate the most consistent demand for principal-level engineers outside of pure technology firms.
Which Nebraska cities have the most principal software engineer jobs?
Omaha, Lincoln, and Bellevue account for the largest share of principal software engineer openings in Nebraska. Omaha dominates because it is home to the headquarters of major financial services and insurance companies that run large internal engineering organizations, while Lincoln's concentration of state government agencies and university-affiliated technology operations drives demand in the capital.
Are there remote principal software engineer jobs in Nebraska?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 38% of principal software engineer openings tied to Nebraska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how well architecture and technical leadership work translate to distributed settings. The portions of the role most likely to stay fully remote are system design, code review, and cross-team technical planning, while some employers require on-site presence for leadership forums or quarterly planning.
How can I get hired as a principal software engineer in Nebraska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for someone without principal-level experience is moving up from a senior software engineer role within a Nebraska employer that has a defined career ladder, such as the large technology teams inside Mutual of Omaha or Sandhills Global. Targeting staff or lead engineer positions first, building a portfolio of architecture decision records or system design work, and earning a recognized cloud platform certification all strengthen a candidacy before a formal principal-level application.
Where can I find and apply to principal software engineer jobs in Nebraska?
You can find and apply to principal software engineer jobs in Nebraska on Migrate Mate, which lists current Nebraska openings at the principal level. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and preferred location, and apply directly to each opening that fits.
