PMTs at Amazon are the end-to-end owners of our software offerings, hardware, and technical services. PMTs leverage their technical depth to partner closely with engineers in defining a vision and building a roadmap to launch technical products that play a key role in making Amazon Earth’s most customer centric company. With a customer base that can span across retail shoppers, developers, and business leaders. PMTs are set on a path to become leaders of business segments or technical organizations.
Key job responsibilities
- Developing and executing scalable business plans and product requirements – being a business owner
- Driving cross-functional projects to completion
- Developing strategies based on data analysis
- Communicating effectively with senior management
- Maintaining customer focus

A day in the life
The primary role of a PMT within Amazon is to assume end-to-end product ownership over one of our technical product offerings. PMTs are expected to dive deep into the technology both from a product and customer perspective, working with software engineers and business partners to define, build, launch and grow new technology-driven products and services. With input from business stakeholders, they develop business and product requirements, prioritize needs, and manage milestones and overall roadmap. Examples of organizations where PMTs may work include (but aren’t limited to): Amazon Web Services (AWS), Prime Video, Alexa, Game Services, and Supply Chain Technologies.

Tips for Your Product Owner Internship Search
Apply earlier than your classmates do
Large employers running structured product internship cohorts open applications the fall before a summer start date. If you wait until spring, many of those roles are already filled. Set a calendar reminder for August or September and treat the application cycle as a semester-long project.
Build a portfolio before you need one
Hiring teams for product owner internships want something to evaluate, not just a list of classes. Document two or three projects as case studies, a short slide deck or written walkthrough showing the problem, your prioritization logic, and the proposed solution. Link to it everywhere your resume goes.
Work your campus network alongside direct applications
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and recruiters at those fairs often move faster for students they meet in person. Professors and career center staff frequently know which companies recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to smaller employers running their own cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach.
Practice product-sense conversations out loud
Product owner intern screens typically involve a case or product-sense conversation, not a technical coding test. Practice answering prompts like 'improve this feature' or 'prioritize this backlog' out loud, walking through your reasoning step by step. Interviewers weigh how you think as much as the answer you land on.
Target structured APM and rotational programs early
Associate product manager programs at larger technology and consumer companies are built to train people new to the field, making them a natural fit for interns without prior PM experience. These programs recruit in the fall, fill fast, and are competitive. Identify the ones that match your background and get your application in during the first wave.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 83% of the product owner internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before you start searching so you are not sorting through roles that do not fit your situation. Filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate first, then apply to the listings that actually match.
Product Owner Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a product owner internship?
Lead with coursework and personal projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. Build a product portfolio, a case study doc or slide deck walking through a problem you scoped, prioritized, and proposed a solution for, gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a product owner internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it is performance on real work, available headcount on the team, and whether you have a clear conversation about your interest before the internship ends. Position yourself for a return offer by treating every project seriously, but keep applying elsewhere so you are not counting on one outcome.
When should I apply for product owner internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers, particularly those running structured APM or rotational programs, recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes as early as August or September. Smaller companies and co-op programs post much closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking listings regularly and setting alerts means you catch roles as soon as they go live.
Are product owner internships paid?
Most professional product owner internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show what the employer discloses. Unpaid internships do exist, primarily at very small companies or nonprofits, so read each listing carefully before applying.
What should a product owner internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that show how you identified a user problem, defined requirements, and proposed or tested a solution, with links to case studies, slide decks, or prototypes wherever possible. Add relevant coursework in product management, business analysis, or technology. Keep the whole thing to one page.
Are there remote product owner internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 17% of the product owner internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast because they attract candidates from every location, so apply early once you find a role that fits and use the work-type filter to surface them without sorting through on-site listings you cannot take.
What is an associate product manager (APM) internship?
An APM internship is a structured program designed specifically for people new to product management, typically offered by larger technology companies. Interns rotate through cross-functional teams, work on real product problems, and receive coaching from senior PMs. These programs recruit early, often the fall before a summer start, and are competitive, so identify the ones that fit your background and apply in the first wave.
Can international students get product owner internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
