How do I get a project engineer job in Columbia?
Focus your search on the sectors driving Columbia's project engineer market: construction and civil infrastructure, defense contracting tied to Fort Jackson, utility and energy firms serving the Midlands, and municipal government projects. Candidates who combine field experience with software proficiency in project scheduling and cost management stand out. Networking through local chapters of professional engineering associations active in the Columbia area also gives applicants a practical edge.
Which companies hire project engineers in Columbia?

Columbia's hiring mix leans toward construction firms, engineering consultancies, utilities, and government contractors serving state agencies and the military installation at Fort Jackson.
Are there remote project engineer jobs in Columbia?
Yes, though project engineer roles are often site-dependent, so fully remote positions are less common than in desk-based fields. About 14% of project engineer openings tied to Columbia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting available flexibility. The portions most suited to remote work in Columbia tend to be design review, reporting, and coordination tasks rather than on-site construction or inspection duties.
How can I get a project engineer job in Columbia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Columbia is targeting project engineer associate or engineer-in-training roles at construction firms, civil engineering consultancies, or utilities operating in the Midlands region. Employers working on state infrastructure contracts and municipal projects in Columbia often hire recent graduates from South Carolina universities. Internship experience with a Columbia-area contractor or government agency, combined with relevant software skills, makes early-career candidates considerably more competitive in this market.
