Public Relations Intern Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a public relations intern in Iowa?
Public relations intern roles in Iowa require no state-issued license or certification. Most employers hire students currently enrolled in a communications, journalism, or public relations program at an Iowa university such as the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, or Drake University. Practical experience through student media organizations, campus PR clubs, or volunteer work with local nonprofits strengthens applications significantly. A writing portfolio or published clips gives candidates a clear edge.
Which companies hire public relations interns in Iowa?
Iowa public relations intern roles are posted by State Farm, Bishs RV, and Linn County and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Iowa's large insurance, financial services, and healthcare employers are consistent sources of structured intern programs throughout the year.
Which Iowa cities have the most public relations intern jobs?
Dubuque, Iowa, and Milo account for the largest share of public relations intern openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives the most volume as the state capital and home to major financial, insurance, and corporate headquarters, while Cedar Rapids and Iowa City generate openings through manufacturing communications, healthcare systems, and university-affiliated organizations.
Are there remote public relations intern jobs in Iowa?
Yes, and they're more common than in many fields since much of the work involves writing, digital content, and media outreach that can be done off-site. About 33% of public relations intern openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of the role. Social media management and media monitoring tasks are the functions most frequently offered in fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a public relations intern in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying through university career centers at Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, or Drake University, where Iowa employers post intern openings specifically for students without prior professional experience. Contributing to campus newspapers, student-run PR firms, or communications departments at local nonprofits builds a portfolio quickly. Candidates who arrive with writing samples, even from class projects, and a working knowledge of AP Style consistently advance past applicants with no materials at all.
