ABOUT THE ROLE
- The Senior Python Developer (Migration Lead) will spearhead the end-to-end migration of our risk analytics platform from SAS to a Python-based technology stack.
- This leadership role focuses on designing a robust and maintainable Python architecture that meets high standards of performance, scalability, and auditability.
- The individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams (including risk analysts, data engineers, and model validation specialists) to ensure a seamless transition of critical risk modeling processes to a modern, automated, and compliant Python environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Technical Leadership: Lead the design of the new Python-based risk analytics architecture and establish coding standards, best practices, and CI/CD pipelines for the migration project.
- SAS-to-Python Code Migration: Analyze complex legacy SAS code and macros, then refactor and rewrite them into efficient, well-structured Python code, preserving existing model logic and outputs.
- Performance & Scalability: Optimize code and algorithms for performance; identify opportunities to leverage data pipelines or distributed processing to handle large datasets and heavy computations within the Python environment.
- Quality Assurance & Testing: Implement automated testing frameworks to verify that Python outputs match legacy SAS outputs. Work closely with model validation teams to address any discrepancies, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Collaboration & Knowledge Transfer: Partner with risk analytics stakeholders to thoroughly understand model requirements and ensure their needs are met. Support and mentor team members (including risk analysts) on Python best practices and facilitate knowledge transfer.
- Documentation & Compliance: Maintain comprehensive technical documentation (designs, code comments, data flow diagrams) to support model risk governance and audit requirements. Ensure all development processes follow internal model risk management policies and quality controls.
DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field (Master's a plus). 7+ years of software development experience with a strong focus on Python for data analysis, modeling, or ETL.
- Python & SAS Expertise: Expert-level Python programming skills (e.g., proficiency with pandas, NumPy, etc.) and experience interpreting or migrating SAS code in a data-intensive analytics context.
- Analytics & Architecture: Proven experience building data-intensive applications or analytics platforms (e.g., financial modeling systems, business intelligence pipelines). Skilled in designing architecture for processing large datasets and integrating with databases or data lakes.
- Software Development Practices: Strong knowledge of the software development lifecycle and best practices, including version control (Git), code reviews, unit/integration testing, and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) in a collaborative team environment.
- Problem-Solving & Communication: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Strong collaboration and communication abilities to work effectively with cross-functional teams and convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Regulated Industry Knowledge: Experience working in regulated industries or risk analytics environments, with an understanding of the importance of auditability, data governance, and thorough model documentation for compliance.

Senior Level Python Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a senior level python engineer job?
Senior level python engineer roles go to candidates who can demonstrate ownership beyond writing code. Employers look for engineers who have led system design decisions, mentored junior developers, and driven projects from architecture through production. A strong portfolio of complex, high-impact systems carries more weight than certifications, and the ability to communicate technical tradeoffs clearly is expected at this stage.
Which companies hire senior level python engineers?
Companies hiring senior level python engineers right now include Capital One, Citi, and Capgemini, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a broad mix of technology firms, financial services companies, healthcare platforms, and enterprise software organizations that depend on senior engineers to own critical backend systems and guide technical direction.
Are there remote senior level python engineer jobs?
Yes, remote and hybrid flexibility is common at this level. About 17% of senior level python engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the trust employers extend to engineers with a proven record of independent ownership. On-site roles also exist, particularly in industries where teams work closely on infrastructure or regulated systems.
What makes a python engineer role senior level?
A senior level python engineer role is defined by scope, ownership, and influence. Senior engineers are expected to design systems rather than just build within them, make independent architectural decisions, and set technical standards for their teams. They mentor and review the work of junior and mid-level engineers, communicate directly with product and leadership stakeholders, and take accountability for the reliability and scalability of what ships.
Which industries hire the most senior level python engineers?
Senior Level python engineer roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Banking & Financial Services, and Investment & Asset Management, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. These sectors drive demand at the senior level because they operate large-scale data pipelines, machine learning systems, or complex distributed applications that require engineers with the depth and judgment to own critical technical decisions.
