Regional Planner Jobs in Arkansas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Arkansas?
Most regional planner positions in Arkansas require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, public administration, or a related field, with a master's degree preferred for senior roles. Arkansas does not issue a state-issued planner's license, but the American Institute of Certified Planners credential is widely expected by public agencies and regional commissions. Candidates build their path through internships with Arkansas metropolitan planning organizations or county planning departments, then pursue AICP eligibility after accumulating the required years of professional planning experience.
Which companies hire regional planners in Arkansas?
Companies currently hiring regional planners in Arkansas include Lockheed Martin, Bosch, and GAF, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Beyond private firms, Arkansas's regional planning commissions, metropolitan planning organizations, and state agencies such as the Arkansas Department of Transportation are among the most consistent sources of regional planner openings in the state.
Which Arkansas cities have the most regional planner jobs?
The cities with the most regional planner openings in Arkansas are Camden, Springdale, and Jonesboro. Little Rock anchors demand as the state capital and home to major state agencies, while Fayetteville and the broader Northwest Arkansas corridor generate openings through rapid population growth, active transportation planning, and the presence of large employers driving infrastructure and land use work in Benton and Washington counties.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Arkansas?
Yes, but they're limited. Regional planning work is largely tied to local government meetings, site visits, and stakeholder engagement, which keeps most roles on-site or hybrid. About 20% of regional planner openings tied to Arkansas are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with remote arrangements most common for data analysis, GIS mapping, and report-writing tasks rather than public-hearing or field coordination responsibilities.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Arkansas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or graduate assistantship with one of Arkansas's metropolitan planning organizations, such as Metroplan in the Little Rock area or the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission in Fayetteville. Many county and municipal planning departments across Arkansas hire planning technicians or zoning assistants as stepping-stone roles that do not require prior professional planning experience. Earning or actively pursuing AICP candidacy status and building a GIS portfolio strengthens applications considerably for candidates without direct regional planning experience.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Arkansas?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in Arkansas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Arkansas openings in one place. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
