Regional Planner Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Kentucky?
Most regional planner positions in Kentucky require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, geography, or public administration, with a master's degree preferred for government roles. Kentucky does not issue a state-specific planner's license, but the nationally recognized AICP credential awarded by the American Institute of Certified Planners is strongly preferred by public agencies such as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and area development districts.
Which companies hire regional planners in Kentucky?
Kentucky regional planner roles are posted by Arvato, FORTNA, and Perfetti Van Melle and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kentucky's area development districts and metropolitan planning organizations, which serve every region of the state, are among the most consistent sources of regional planner openings.
Which Kentucky cities have the most regional planner jobs?
Louisville, Erlanger, and Kentucky have the most regional planner openings in Kentucky. Louisville and Lexington dominate as the state's two largest metros, anchored by their respective metropolitan planning organizations and city-county government planning departments, while Frankfort consistently generates openings due to its concentration of state agency offices including the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Kentucky?
Yes, but they're rare. Regional planning work involves site visits, public hearings, and coordination with local governments, which limits fully remote arrangements. About 50% of regional planner openings tied to Kentucky are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to be roles focused on data analysis, GIS mapping, or policy writing rather than community engagement or field work.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Kentucky with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to internship or graduate assistant roles at Kentucky's area development districts, which actively recruit from planning programs at the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville. Entry-level positions with titles like planning technician or GIS analyst at Louisville Metro Government or the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet are common lateral starting points. Building a portfolio that includes a GIS mapping project or a land use analysis strengthens any application without prior professional experience.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Kentucky?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in Kentucky on Migrate Mate, which lists current Kentucky openings across state agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, and regional development authorities. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly.
