Regional Planner Jobs in Louisiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Louisiana?
Most regional planner positions in Louisiana require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, geography, or a related field, with a master's degree preferred for senior roles. Louisiana does not issue a state-specific planner license, but the American Institute of Certified Planners credential is widely required or preferred by Louisiana employers. Candidates build toward AICP certification by accumulating documented work experience under a qualified planner before sitting for the national exam.
Which companies hire regional planners in Louisiana?
Employers hiring regional planners in Louisiana right now include Worley, Saronic Technologies, and BASF, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Louisiana's regional planning commissions, parish governments, and state agencies such as the Louisiana Division of Administration are among the most consistent sources of openings statewide.
Which Louisiana cities have the most regional planner jobs?
The Louisiana cities with the most regional planner openings are Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Geismar. New Orleans drives the highest volume given its concentration of regional planning commissions, coastal resilience agencies, and federal grant-funded infrastructure programs, while Baton Rouge anchors state agency hiring and Shreveport serves as the primary public-sector hub for the northwestern region.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Louisiana?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical fields, since regional planners regularly attend public meetings, site visits, and agency briefings that require an in-person presence. About 25% of regional planner openings tied to Louisiana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and the roles most likely to offer remote flexibility are GIS analysis, grant writing, and long-range policy work rather than project management or permitting roles.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Louisiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a planning technician or planning assistant role with a Louisiana parish government or regional planning commission, where entry-level candidates support senior planners on zoning reviews, public outreach, and GIS mapping. The Capital Region Planning Commission and South Central Planning and Development Commission periodically hire at the associate level. A degree in planning or geography combined with a GIS certificate and a portfolio of mapping or land use projects gives candidates a clear edge over other applicants without direct work experience.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Louisiana?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in Louisiana on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and preferred location, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
