Regional Planner Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Minnesota?
Most regional planner positions in Minnesota require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, geography, or public policy, with a master's degree strongly preferred for mid-level and senior roles. Minnesota does not issue a state license for planners, but the American Institute of Certified Planners credential is widely expected by government and agency employers. Candidates with strong GIS skills and coursework or experience in Minnesota land use law and environmental review move through hiring processes most quickly.
Which companies hire regional planners in Minnesota?
Employers hiring regional planners in Minnesota right now include Graco, Premier Marine, and JLL, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The Metropolitan Council, county planning departments, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation are among the most consistent public-sector sources of openings statewide.
Which Minnesota cities have the most regional planner jobs?
The cities with the most regional planner openings in Minnesota are Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and Eden Prairie. The Twin Cities metro dominates because it houses the Metropolitan Council, Hennepin and Ramsey county governments, and the state's largest municipal planning offices, while Duluth and Rochester each support active regional planning programs tied to port and freight infrastructure and large healthcare campus development respectively.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, but they're relatively limited. Regional planning involves public hearings, site visits, and close coordination with local governments, which keeps most roles at least partially on-site. About 59% of regional planner openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with the remote-eligible work typically falling in long-range analysis, GIS mapping, and grant writing rather than community engagement or field work.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a planning technician or planning aide role with a county or municipal planning department, where you support permit reviews and GIS data work before advancing to planner titles. Hennepin County, Ramsey County, and smaller metro-area cities regularly post these positions. Graduate internships through the Metropolitan Council and Minnesota DOT are well-known pathways for students finishing planning degrees. Building a portfolio of GIS project work and pursuing AICP Candidate status early gives applicants without full-time experience a concrete edge.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to the positions that fit.
