Tips for Your Remote Assistant General Counsel Job Search
Tailor your resume for the sector
Assistant general counsel roles in financial services prioritize regulatory and securities experience, while tech companies weight commercial contracts and data privacy. Reorder your bullet points so the most relevant practice area leads for each application you submit.
Demonstrate outside-to-in-house transition fluency
If you're moving from a law firm, hiring managers want proof you can shift from billing hours to managing business risk. Highlight matters where you advised on business strategy, not just legal outcomes, and quantify the deal or dispute value where you can.
Highlight your bar admission and state coverage
Many postings specify the states where the company operates and expect admission there. List every active bar admission on your resume prominently, and note any multi-state litigation or regulatory work you've handled to show geographic reach.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists assistant general counsel openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare business-impact stories for interviews
Interviewers at this level ask how you've reduced legal spend, accelerated contract cycles, or resolved disputes without litigation. Prepare three to four concrete examples where your legal judgment produced a measurable business result, and practice delivering each in under two minutes.
Negotiate title, scope, and reporting line
Before accepting an offer, confirm whether the role reports to the general counsel or a deputy, how many direct reports you'll have, and whether the title carries budget authority. These structural factors affect your career trajectory far more than base salary adjustments at this level.
